Also for those who aren't in the hunt to see what youngsters could be on the rosters next year. Like with the Red Sox they called and kept up Owens because they are out of the hunt and need pitching next year. So they kept him up instead of pitching in AAA playoffs. Also like you said the rest factor. A team like the Cardinals could start to rest players so they are fresh for the playoffs to start. Where they have already clinched a spot.

Listening to the A's radio broadcast driving home tonight they were going on and on and on about Barry Zito starting on Sat. I mean, it's not like he's an all-time great, and I don't want to hear about a comeback and overcoming adversity when a guy has $200M in the bank. Ugh.

He was great for the A's and that's what they're remembering. I actually tend to ignore what he did across the bay.

Him starting on Sat is a circus show but why not salvage something here at the end of the season and please some fans for once.

You aren't understanding the overall picture of that game at all.

          I assume you aren't an A's fan?

I used to be. And yeah, I get the Mulder/Hudson/Zito thing, I just don't find Zito toughing it out in Nashville for one last start to be this amazing story. And they were focusing on Zito for the entirety of the conversation I heard. He'll be throwing 50 pitches

But it's not just about Zito.

Regardless of what you heard I'm not sure where the disconnect lies?

I guess the whole "used to be a fan" sheds some light but still doesn't explain why you'd be surprised that people that continued to be fans through the tough years would be excited.

I guess sometimes it's just easier to hate a really good story?

It is a nice story. I would be more worried about one of them embarrassing themselves, especially Zito. Getting hit for 6 ER in 1.2 innings isn't the way I wanna see this play out. I guess I will catch the start of the game and quickly switch if things start going south.

Red Sox to name Mike Hazen as General Manager! He was my favorite candidate for GM, so I'm glad we kept him before we lost him!

Well he was the assistant GM under Cherington.

Hazen initially came to the Red Sox as director of player development in February 2006 (Farrell would follow as the team's pitching coach eight months later), and then was vice president, player development and amateur scouting, in 2011. He was promoted to vice president and assistant general manager (under Cherington) in 2012, then named a senior vice president and assistant GM in early 2015.

I highly doubt Vegas ever gets a team. Not only the gambling, but I just don't see steady fan support over an 81 game/6 month season.

If they do go to 32 teams, I would like to see them look at going to four, 8-team divisions and have the 8 teams just play among themselves. Have 4 winners that constitute your playoffs and go from there. Could be interesting and reminiscent of the early days of baseball.
