"Act like Jeter," said Gossage.
Because Jeter never fist pumped or threw his bat to the side after a big hit.
Okay."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. Re: MLB Off-Topic
Adam Wainwright shared his two cents on the whole bat flip debate.
If a pitcher struck one of these great hitters out and then did a cartwheel off the mound, then the hitter’s going to throw everything, they’re going to bench-clear,” Wainwright said. “But if a hitter hits a homer and throws a bat 26 feet up in the air, they think it’s OK? I don’t know if that’s OK. I think you can have fun, but be respectful at the same time.”
“I just know there are always going to be people who stretch the boundaries of the unsaid rules,” Wainwright said. “There always have been. You can look back at Reggie Jackson in the ’70s. He was doing stuff like that and pimping balls, and there are many people that did it over the years. The different personalities are great — they help our game — but you can do it respectfully.Comment

See, this is the main problem I have against those with a beef against players expressing themselves on the field. It's always about being "respectful". Players celebrate within reason in just about every other sport. After a big goal, basket, touchdown, and all that. So why are baseball players not allowed to celebrate a little? Why are they expected to feel bad (keep your down and keep it moving, fella!) when having success out there on the field? How are you being disrespected? Why are your feelings hurt?
BTW, to Wainrights comment, if a pitcher punched out a dangerous hitter in the 9th inning during a 1-run, 2-out, playoff game, I'd have no problems with him doing a cartwheel off the mound.
Fernando Rodney does his Arrow-shooting routine every time he records a save.
Imagine if a hitter did that after every bomb he hit? He'd get his ear pierced every AB.
Yet nobody says anything about Rodney's gimmick (which I enjoy, BTW).
Pitchers are used to having their way and don't like it if they get their ego's bruised.
If a hitter has the audacity to launch a home-run off of them, but doesn't just bury his chin into his chest and do his best to look sorry about it, they're being disrespected.
Clayton Kershaw records more than one punch-out per inning. The best HR hitter will be lucky to hit a bomb 8% of the time.
Let the big boys have some fun now and then, regardless if it bruises someone's feelings.Comment

We have such an incredible level of talent in this sport and the baseball world only gets talking when **** like this comes up.
Pathetic.Comment

Re: MLB Off-Topic
I think that's why we're talking about it. This generation of players seems to be a little less tight with its view of celebrating then previous.
I actually agree with Waino. Do it respectfully. I think most guys do and will. A fist pump, a yell of enthusiasm, a bat flip or hop step out of the box. Within context. I don't want to see Bautista flip his bat like he did every time he hits a dinger. But in that moment with those stakes? Totally appropriate and understandable.
Like most subjects, I think you'll find the extremes driving the conversation. The rigid tough crowd that wants no emotion shown, and the other side (or perceived other side) of guys going nuts after recording a simple out at first base.
Much ado about nothing. What presents a problem is the payback. That's something the MLB needs to address. I know it's an age old game but people's season's, career's, and actual life is on the line if we allow teams to throw at batters out of anger. Then the varying degrees of sending a message come in to play and the whole thing is a mess. Just take it case by case.NHL - Philadelphia Flyers

What I'm hearing is batters need to be allowed to throw their bats at pitchers in retaliation as long as they claim it slipped.

Re: MLB Off-Topic
I have to say, I don't understand how there is even a "debate" going on about this. If Gossage had come out and said "I want a Dr. who practices medicine like it's 1977...not these nerds and all their science and technology" people would dismiss him as an absolute quack and there wouldn't even be a discussion.
Things evolve, information improves things, etc. Baseball or any other sport is no different. The game of baseball today is as good as it has EVER been...we need to stop worrying about the fact it isn't what it was and instead enjoy what it is."People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring." - Rogers HornsbyComment

Re: MLB Off-Topic
Meanwhile, a pitcher can throw the ball at the hitters face. Or at any of his teammates for that matter.
Sure a batter can ask his pitcher to whack someone, but it's not the same.
This debate is old and tired just like Gossage.
As an OS member already pointed out, the irony is that Goose was an oddball for his times what with his facial hair and being a reliever and all.
I'm sure some cagey old coot from his era pointed out that baseball does not need relievers "Pitch till your arm falls off wimp!"Comment

Re: MLB Off-Topic
Im guessing this is where I go to post about Adam LaRouche
Is this guy insane? what other profession would you be allowed to have your son there every minute of the day? get over it. Its business, I get having your children visit, thats fine. But all the time? being a distraction for players to get work in?
We dont know the extent of it, but this seems like a reasonable request of ownership, I sure wouldnt be walking away from Millions because I cant see my son until after im done work.
Sure enough Harper is there to support him, players need to shut their mouths and play.Comment

Re: MLB Off-Topic
^Guys, we got Goose Gossage to sign up on OS!
In other news, Dodgers minor league pitcher Adrian Salcedo has been suspended 144 games for PEDs. He was suspended 80 games in April for a stimulant, and 100 games in September for a PED and stimulant.
For those doing the math at home, he still had 94 games on his previous suspension. Add this new full-season suspension to that, and Mr. Salcedo is not eligible to pitch until game 95 of the 2017 season.
And if you're doing the other math, he's got 2 PED strikes and 2 stimulant strikes. If he gets busted with one more of either, he'll join Shoeless Joe, Pete Rose, and Jenrry Mejia on the lifetime ban list.Last edited by TripleCrown9; 03-16-2016, 07:06 PM.Boston Red Sox
