    Re: MLB Off-Topic

Looks like no matter what, we'll see changes for next season in terms of pace of play. 20 second pitch clocks and mound visit limit. Will be interesting to see if it gets strictly enforced or forgotten about like the batter box rule.

MLB average time between pitches last year was 24 seconds. 20 second limit means at least 4 seconds per pitch saved(I'd say average might be around 16-18 secs per pitch). Lets say there's 140 pitches in a game. That'd be over 9 minutes saved per game!

I know pace of play is more about dead time than game time, but over 9 minutes saved(realistically could be closer to 15 mins) is huge. Limit mound visits and you might have 20 mins less dead time each game.

Just wonder the specifics on pitch clocks. Does the time start the moment the pitcher receives back the ball? Do pickoffs count towards the time? Will pitch clock lead to more steals since runners can better time pitches? Can pitchers just step off and reset the clock?

In regards to the pitch clock you should try to watch the Arizona Fall League championship game this Saturday at 3 EST as they've been using the pitch clock all during the AFL season. I will be watching some of it to see how that is being implemented.

That's ridiculous. Not saying it's incorrect, I'm saying it's so strange that they take so long between pitches. When I batted and pitched, I got right back there and ready to go.

During one of the playoff games, I was a half hour behind, and hit the 30-second advance button on my remote after every pitch. Never missed a single pitch.

If it's the ninth inning and the closer is making sure the sign he wants is that perfect one with the crowd behind a payoff pitch, I understand a little bit of time in between pitches. This is just far too much.

I'm glad these are put in play, but I hope to never have to hear a horn or something, or watch an umpire signal a ball to the pitcher. I just hope the players follow it. Bring my intentional walks back, though.

          Re: MLB Off-Topic

Speaking of pace, this is from an article in the Tampa Bay Times from this past June:

Three of the five slowest starters in the majors are Rays, per data compiled by fangraphs.com. Matt Andriese is atop the list, with an average of 28.4 seconds between pitches, with Chris Archer second at 26.6 and Alex Cobb fifth at 26.3.

The midpoint of the 88 qualified starters ranked is 22.9 seconds, so over a 100-pitch outing Andriese spends an extra nine-plus minutes doing nothing.

There's no way stepping off the mound should reset the clock lol. 20 seconds is a long damn time to everyone in the world except baseball players. From what I know the pitch clock is only used when no one is on base.

In lower levels the clock starts as soon as the pitcher receives the ball. And both the hitter and pitcher are responsible for making sure the clock doesn't run out. If the hitter is stalling and doesn't get into the box to give the pitcher enough time to get the pitch in then the hitter will receive a strike.

The actual physical clock on the scoreboard isn't as outrageous or intrusive as people no doubt think.

                  For sure.
But I don't care. For decades games finished well before 2.5 hours.
I think I've mentioned this on these boards previously, but in Hank Aaron's book, they played a 12-inning game in 2H 37MIN and it was the third longest game that season.
That's downright swift in today's game.

So I'm not sure why hitters and pitchers of this era feel they can't perform unless they take 30s or more between pitches.
I love Pedroia, but there's no reason he has to check his straps and stretch his face 19x between pitches.
Stay in the box. Stay on the rubber. Play ball.

He's definitely one of the more frustrating guys to watch in the box. At least Aaron Judge doesn't take an ungodly amount of time before he's in the box. I hope he continues in that vein and maybe it'll lead to a generation of young stars who get set up and ready to go ASAP.

The next video that auto-played after for me was on Manfred discussing things like getting rid of the extreme shifts. I would actually be for this if they did, but I know I'm sort of in the minority there. I am not completely opposed to them to the point that I think it's ludicrous they're allowed either.

Yeah, he called it before time had run out. Judging by where the clock was at before they cut away from it, I would guess there was about 3-4 seconds (or less) left when he got in the box. Not enough time for the catcher to signal and for the pitcher to actually throw the ball. Good umpiring.

regarding the pitch clock implementing. I guess I'm glad they are introducing it mainly so we can stop hearing about it because I don't think pace of play is a problem in the slightest.
