Barry Bonds number retirement and all that, as well.
I'll be honest, I had to watch the game late on recording so I avoided these threads for spoiler purposes. Must have missed that then.

On the Bonds note, I got an e-mail from the Giants reminding me about the ceremony too.

I think the thing more so is that he was old enough to know better. Additionally, just another example in a gazillion postings of how easy it is to hide behind any form of social media and typically say something that you probably wouldn't say in an ACTUAL social situation. Sad times in a way.

Well, I think that's exactly it right there. Everybody is a tough guy on the Internet, and it might not be their actual persona.

I once tested the waters to see if being funny on a YouTube comment under crude circumstances would give me exactly the kick that maybe these other people get. A single individual was personally affected by what I said, and I became so guilt-ridden and apologetic over my joke because my stance is nowhere near the grounds of what I said, that we began exchanging e-mails to each other feeling out our personal stories of things we have gone through surrounding the topic at hand. She was more than forgiving and I was more than sorry, because that just is not me.

Even if this "was" him, I'm sure it was not on a level that he is finding out how to join the KKK over the dark web or something. I just think he was a moron, and I'm simply looking past it. Not forgiving him or anything, simply ignoring it because that is simply what today's youth does when you hand them a piece of technology that they can get on the internet with. It's shameful, I wish it weren't so, and I try to be in a position where I can make the slightest of amends with those that I have around me... but damn it that rap music.

          No, I agree.

Just wanted to call out that being 17 is not a man.

Maybe not in this current generation, but even now there are a hell of a lot of 17 year olds who are. But even if you're not, you absolutely should be very much on the way to being one, as it's not a switch that just flips when you turn 18.

You are certainly far too old to be using your age as an excuse for being a bigot.

That depends on who you are.
My mom got pregnant with me when she and my dad were 16.
My dad quit HS and worked 3 jobs.
They bought I has when they were 17 on he pay alone.
He was a man when he was 17 for sure.

By the way, there is no way in hell I would have said the things he said when I was 17.
I know I am an old man of 45 and there was no such thing as social media but again there is no way I would have said racist things like that.
I would have been beaten if I would have, and not by my parents.

True, circumstances sometimes dictate when manhood begins. I remember being stupid at 17, going 120 in my car, and worried about acne in school.

This whole narrative of hating on a guy due to his past and not his current self just rubs me the wrong way. Speaking of parents, my dad when he was 20 was constantly stoned, drunk, selfish and abusive...now? He's the most loving man to his family I've ever met with perhaps one of the most kindest and giving hearts. People can change so why not allow Hader to explain himself and prove he has changed versus writing him off.

Ah, sensitivity training. I remember they tried that with noted racist a-hole John Rocker who went on to brag about how he only attended for a few minutes and it being mostly a way to get people off Selig's butt over the issue.

Guess we out definition of bravery is different.
This seems like a low blow to me in terms of attacking a fellow OS member. I don't think the implications about "bravery" and "acceptance" were in the original post like you wanted them to be. There's something to be said for not taking things out of context, I think.

What Hader did is wrong. Yeah, "him being 17" isn't a good enough excuse for having hateful views and being stupid enough to express them in public, but people should be able to say good on him for admitting to it and addressing it when so many people would simply lie and say they got hacked, it wasn't them, it was a joke taken out of context, deny deny deny. Absent being able to go back in time and actually not be stupid and hateful on Twitter, it's a step forward.

There used to be someplace in between a slap on the wrist and eternal damnation when someone said something stupid. It seems there's no middle ground anymore. We can only speculate on what his current, true beliefs are and he has a long road ahead of him dealing with other idiots on social media and owing up to his past comments in the context of getting along with his teammates.

Good on him for admitting the ignorant tweets were his instead of lying that he was hacked for tweets spanning more than a year at the age of 17 when he wasn't famous? Wow, bar can't get much lower.

Hader shouldn't get a pass because he was "young and stupid." He said too many abhorrent things to just let it slide with that excuse. But I don't think you can bury the guy either. He owned it. That's a start. He has a lot more work ahead of him to prove he's really changed from his "young and stupid" days. But I think he should get a chance to prove it and make amends.

Yes, good on him for admitting it. Not good on him for having hateful views and expressing that. I think I've been fairly clear about it. I'm not saying he's my favorite player or anything. I also don't think "ignorant" is a strong enough condemnation for the content of the messages. They're downright hateful and spiteful.

But, you are right that the bar has become so low because there are so many people in society that don't recognize facts or admit to anything, ever. It is this context that leaves people craving for any sort/shred/scrap of personal accountability.

I'm not giving him a pass, I'm just placing him with a lot of the idiotic in our youth, clumping them together, and saying he is just no worse than they are. There is a larger outcry with them that needs to be addressed, not just this one public figure.

Besides, I really would hope/think he has matured from that stage now anyway. I still watch films that Mel Gibson acts in or directs, I cheered on Michael Vick when he played for injured QB's on the Steelers and Eagles, and if legend holds true then the world is still admiring of all of Ty Cobb's greatness (which I realize was a different time than now). If he posted this now and today, this would be a far different story for me.
