The most overused, overwrought cliché in baseball? Play the game the right way. What does that even mean, though? The answer to that question must take into account three important factors: When, Who, and Where.

I know there was a lot of "back in my day" talk on the Bautista bat flip...so I'll just leave this here:

Was that a called 3 looking bat flip? Why did I love that so much? I'm sitting here thinking how awesome that was, but I'm a guy that loves Cam dancing so maybe I'm at fault for loving athlete expressionism.

Well, I've already seen the back tracking. "There's a difference between celebrating and being upset over a pop up."

And while I agree let's not pretend that was the difference being argued prior to the Mantle footage.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

"You'll not find more penny-wise/pound-foolish behavior than in Major League Baseball." - Rob Neyer

When I think of bat flips in big moments and I know it was shown during the whole Bautista thing but the context is funny because Tom Lawless was a classic punch and judy hitter. We shouldn't make the whole bat flip thing such a huge controversy though like everything, it should be done in moderation.

There are two types of bat flips (or of any baseball nuance): a celebratory type and a type that is just showing up the pitcher and the other team. The difference is really whether it is improvised or seemingly "choreographed," at least to the extent that it seems to be for more than what it was.

Those Williams ones look no better than the Bautista one.
