I have a feeling Jerry Hairston Jr. may blow a gasket when he sees the Pillar "incident".

especially when random dudes come in trying to show off a whole repertoire with no regard to strategy lol

well, to be fair they're not usually inserted in a game when strategy is a premium, but still, throw as hard as you can! follow it with your best knuckler!

I wish we had Statcast 15 years ago, because I would love to see the speed of the ball coming off this bat.

What was the length/weight of Barry's bat back then?

Well, back in '07 he ordered 34 inch bats at 31.6 ounces. He did that as the Maple Bat Corporation was on shaky ground at that time and he wanted to make sure he'd get his full ration of bats that had been his supplier since '97. I'm going to assume there wasn't much of a variance between '01 and '07.

Castillo officially cleared waivers , was outrighted off the roster and assigned to Pawtucket. Money left on his deal: $52.02 million.

Rusnay Castillo signing looks to have been a mistake.

I saw this on Twitter over the weekend but I would love to hear the organization screw up and completely reactionary to missing out on Jose Abreu.

I guess we can officially declare him the first big Cuban money deal bust.

An interesting little study by FiveThirtyEight on improvement/decline in certain pitches this year.

I was watching the Diamondbacks-Phillies game earlier today on MLB Network, and they had the Phillies' broadcast team on with McCarthy and Stairs (keep in mind they are ranked #30th on this list).

Shelby Miller had just returned from the DL for Arizona, and they were breaking down how his BB/9 had increased this year and his strike % had gone down. Matt Stairs throws us greatest words of wisdom that players should follow, and it was something like: "If this is the first time a player is facing Shelby Miller, he should never swing at the first pitch, because [insert something about not knowing what kind of location and movement it has when it's up there]."

Mid-sentence, the guy up to bat slams the first pitch fastball over the CF's head for an RBI double. He has to eat his words really quickly whilst trying to defend what he was trying to say. Probably not the best case he had for getting out of the 30th spot for broadcaster rankings haha.

If you want to see it on MLB.TV, it's in the bottom of the second inning with two outs, a runner on third, and Goeddel up to bat (at the 44:50 mark).

I just don't get this announcer bash-fest a lot of fans seem to go on. Every sports forum is littered with "I hate that guy" or "he's terrible" etc. etc. etc. It's not like you're forced to watch them or listen to them.

Nothing Stairs said is unreasonable. It just happened to be wrong for that particular hitter. I don't think waiting to see what a guy offers is a foolhardy strategy when it comes to your first time facing a new pitcher.
