His story is curious. Probably not the place to discuss it but he claims he took the plea deal to protect the family.

Either way, tough situation and whether he's innocent or guilty, his career will likely never take off.

So, 11 years ago today Barry Bonds hit #756. Coincidentally, on the 11th day of this month, the very same Barry Bonds will get his #25 jersey retired as the Giants play the Pirates (his two former teams).

I was at PETCO for #755, and it was amazing. The amount of camera flashes! I was out in RCF so I saw the stands behind home plate, and it was amazeballs.

Then I saw #756 which I guess was a couple of days afterward because I was still in SD for family vacation watching it on TV. For some stupid reason, I was the only person on the planet watching who didn't even think the ball was going to go out when it hit off the bat. My family cheered, Bonds raised his arms, PBP announcer Duane Kuiper was all into it... and I was sitting there thinking he was going to get AT&T'ed with a flyout. It ended up making it by plenty, a true no-doubter.

YES! A promo for 8/11 on the Giants-Astros game I'm watching...

Gates will open at 3:45 PM on 8/11 and the event will start promptly at 5 PM. First 20K fans will receive a Barry Bonds #25 cap.

Plenty of franchise greats, former managers (Jim Leyland, Dusty Baker), and former teammates (Kirk Rueter, Royce Clayton etc) will also be there.

I think he was claiming that he didn't want to have to put his neice through the whole trial/being a witness thing, but it stinks of BS. If I recall he was shady with it as well, trying to hide his conviction from scouts and only changing his story when he got found out by reporters and they realised it would cripple his draft chances. No one admits to being a child molester to protect someone from reliving an ordeal that didn't happen, it makes zero sense.

Keep in mind please that I'm not protecting the guy or saying I believe him. Just stating what I've read about the case and his words.

He has claimed innocence from the beginning and pled guilty as part of a plea deal.

Yeah, his reasoning is he wanted to protect his cousin and her family from undergoing tough questioning in court.

That said, the niece and her mother have maintained that the abuse was real.

A final note, the plea deal was supposed to seal the charge or whatever the official wording is. The only reason it's out is because someone illegally obtained the documents and released it to the public. He didn't hide it to be sneaky. He did his time and probation.

I don't have remorse for someone that's very likely a child molester, but I do think the crime is overshadoweding the fact that his rights were violated. Though I can see the argument that karma works that way.

This is from an SI article: https://www.si.com/mlb/2018/05/16/lu...h-oregon-state

On May 18, 26-year-old Danny Moran, the Oregon State beat writer for The Oregonian, sat in his Portland apartment and typed "Luke Heimlich" into an Oregon public records database. The newsroom has long stressed background checks on feature subjects, and not only because the ice cream vendor in a 1993 puffball piece ended up being a former sex offender. Editors call it the "no surprises" rule. Moran hit enter.

It was supposed to be a standard player profile, a lead-up to Oregon State's postseason via its ace. A page opened. There, in a box on the right side of the screen, four key words popped: failure report sex offender.

Eleven days earlier, after tripping over Heimlich's name online, Moran began making calls. A source at a county DA's office sketched the basics: Heimlich had been 15, the victim aged "12 and younger." A news researcher informed him that Washington state doesn't automatically seal juvenile records for certain crimes. The Pierce County records office agreed to send the Heimlich case file, but only by mail, and after receiving a money order.
I don't think he had any rights violated.

You're right. I forgot that part where he failed to register so it made his record public. Or something like that.

I need to find the article. It doesn't matter, really. Not trying to explain the guy. Teams are smart to stay away.

Edit. I can't find evidence of my edit so I'll let it be.

Correct, two players hit for the cycle in the same game.

Basically Heimlich is not talented enough to be worth the trouble to teams. He has never been part of MLB or its affiliate so it is easier to keep him out in the first place. It would be interesting to see how a team would have handle the situation if he was already an established player in the league.

After hearing Simpson's comments I can't help but feel Rizzo overreacted way way too much. He said nothing worth more than a slight laugh or smile. To track a guy down and confront him in person is laughable and comes off as insecure. Every time he is in the news he comes off as being a little off.

I'm not sure if rights violated is the right term, but it says in the article that the only reason they had the hit for "failure to report as a sex offender" in the first place is because of a clerical error made by the police. They screwed up his paperwork, it got flagged, he had to go to court, and the court files are what outed him, which should never have happened in the first place. Definitely an interesting situation.
