    Re: MLB Off-Topic

I posted this about a half hour ago in the wrong thread by accident. I'll just bring it here so it's better in sequence:

    - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

See, what Will Smith is going into should be save opportunity worthy even if he only pitches through the eighth inning.

Runners on 2nd & 3rd, one out, leading by a run. If Smith strikes out the next two hitters, then the Giants score two more runs in the eighth, and another pitcher comes into the ninth to have two home runs hit and three more home runs robbed to win the ballgame, Smith should get the save and not the person who closed out that game.

Granted, this didn't happen because of the sacrifice fly that was hit as I was typing this, which gives Smith a blown save and I'm okay with that.

Much like if the starting pitcher doesn't go five innings, it's up to the scorekeeper to determine who pitched the most effectively out of the pen to decide who receives the win... the save should also consider such a "metric."

Speaking of Giants retiring numbers and August 11th...

The Giants announced today, August 11th, that they're retiring Will Clark's #22 next season.

(They announced it today because they were honoring their 1989 NL Champs, not because of the date)

I hope they're playing the Pirates. Will Bonds be there?

Maybe if it's like a "Giants Greats" sorta thing. They were only teammates for one season, in 1993 (a team that went 103-59, btw. With Bonds leading the league with 46 home runs, and won NL MVP)

Oh! That was the Ken Griffey JR baseball SNES roster season! Anyone remember the name designated for the guy who had his jersey retired, blah blah

I want to say Greta Garbo, were the Giants the team that had names of bombshell actresses from eons ago?

Bonds had the last name Pickering I think, and I think our DH spot (because I was always the Giants and I played my friend who was always the Mariners, so DH rules applied when he was home) had the last name Brooks.

I think someone also had the last name Marshall, can't remember who though.

50 years ago today, the Mets woke up 8 games back in the NL East. They went on to become the Miracle Mets and upset the Orioles in the World Series.

You know, I was reading more about Will Clark's jersey retirement and learned that Barry Bonds has had his jersey number retired already. No, really, it says it right here in this article:

The Giants will retire Will Clark's No. 22 next year, making him just the second former San Francisco player to receive the honor without being in the Hall of Fame.

I also realized that Will Clark and Barry Bonds were teammates in 1993 for one season. And that surprised me because I always thought Clark was gone by the time Bonds made his way to San Francisco. Both good players, but neither one a very likable person.

Getting his jersey retired will be quite a thrill for Will Clark.

It's all about context and expectations. You build a juggernaut like the Cubs were in 2016 and then get a worse result every year afterward. Some fans want to give Joe Maddon credit for the team being loaded with good players. I like to think he was mostly in the right place at the right time. But here we are indeed.

Why does that make you chuckle?

It could be funny to look back at the takes from the deadline if the Mets make the playoffs, but it's already funny.

To answer your question before you went off road here with that last comment--Yankees fans have a reputation (not referring to anyone here specifically) for being a "what have you done for me lately" fan base with anything less than championships not being good enough. Maybe that's changed a bit after a decade without a pennant and embracing the farm system more recently, but I found it interesting that a Yankees fan was telling me how great it is to win 90-95 games in the regular season and not have postseason success. Talk about role reversal.

If you are truly trying to understand why some Cubs fans want Joe Maddon gone, you can read back thru this thread a bit. But, pick any two of: poor bullpen management, team advancing less in the postseason each year, losing the division to the Brewers despite a massive payroll advantage, poor play on the road, poor use of leadoff hitters, no sense of urgency (he agrees with you that winning 90-95 games and doing nothing in the playoffs is a success). Plus, he doesn't really seem to be having as much fun with expectations being what they are, rather than with expectations being what they were pre-2016.
