Re: MLB Off-Topic
Was the name the issue with the team or the actual logo? I don't really see an issue with the name Indians for their team, I mean if you get rid of that, then you're basically opening the door for things like that to happen to any native name.
That logo I like because it still represents their name (the C shaped in a way where it has an I in it, and has the feather on it too). Just looks like a simple yet creative logo.
Obviously the name is next.

It would be similar to having this image for a team called the Negroes

Re: MLB Off-Topic
No, because it was always the racist likeness of Chief Wahoo that was the issue, not the appropriation of American Indian culture in general. They aren't changing the name of the team and that's never been the issue here (unlike Redskins which connotes something else entirely); incorporating a feather in the logo isn't going to piss anyone off.
A toothpick could've been the mascot for 100 years and people would still get mad for changing it to something else. Some folks just hold deeply conservative views about change. They'd lament ruining a logo with a perfectly fine toothpick on it. And some would couch it in their political views as they always do.Chicago Cubs | Chicago Bulls | Green Bay Packers | Michigan WolverinesComment

Re: MLB Off-Topic
Okay guys. Just make sure not to at me when the feathers and name become an issue in the near future.
The Wahoo is just the beginning.

My point was that the image of Chief Wahoo is a gross, racist characterization of Native American people. If anyone really wants to argue against that, then I don't know what will convince them.Comment

Re: MLB Off-Topic
I get why they're doing it, but sucks to see that gone. It was one of the first baseball logos I ever knew. First baseball video game I ever played(it was a demo) had the Indians as one of teams you could select, so that logo has some nostalgia for me even though I was never really a Cleveland Indians fan(though I did end up buying their hat with that logo on it).
I hope they get a new logo instead of using that generic block C as their logo. Of all the concepts out there, I've always liked this one:
This isn't going to stop the protests as fans are still allowed to enter the stadium with clothing that has Chief Wahoo on it, and as far as I understand they can still make signs with the Chief Wahoo logo. And they are still going to sell merchandise with Chief Wahoo logo on it.
So while the logo may be removed from the jerseys and the stadium itself, it's not going away, and neither will the protests/issue.Last edited by countryboy; 01-30-2018, 10:03 PM.I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

Re: MLB Off-Topic
I hadn't heard about issues with the feather, but reading up on it, it seems to be the specific type of feather used in the image.
This red feather that is worn by the so-called Chief Wahoo is a part of a ceremonial feather that is given to our warriors that have shed their own blood in battle ... It's very spiritual, the eagle feather; the eagle represents the messenger to the creator because it flies so high. And the eagle, of course, is revered. And so it's a mockery of our own religion, our own spiritualityComment

Maybe the organization will bring in representatives from Native American tribes to get feedback on what would be appropriate for a new logo. That's what FSU did with the Seminole tribe.Comment

Re: MLB Off-Topic
I was commenting specifically about the feathers. The name has already been an issue for a while and I'm sure it'll continue to be. I don't really see why feathers would be an issue, but maybe it will become one, I don't know.
My point was that the image of Chief Wahoo is a gross, racist characterization of Native American people. If anyone really wants to argue against that, then I don't know what will convince them.
I'm just commenting on maj's post that I think the logo he wants will still create controversy.
