Well in tennis they have a machine that tracks if a ball is in or out of the fault line so it makes the umpire's job a lot easier when it comes to close calls.

So the kind of technology that would be able to call games is there in a very rudimentary way. The techonology can be used to do this but we all know the Umps would raise a stink over it.

I think they could do it on the bases with realtively accurate success, but what about behind the plate? Sure they could get corners right, but how would the adjust each individual hitter with regard to height? Maybe you could have an "operator" adjust the machine before each at bat, but I'm not sure how timely, or effective that would be.

the technical issues could probably be fixed if they wanted, but I highly doubt the MLB would want games umped by a machine...I could see a really big revolt against it by baseball purists

If they could do it right, I'd like to see games called by a computer, but it'll be at least 10 years, probably more, before we see that

That BJays-Sox series was a very good series, but it has to be one of the worst called games i've ever seen during a bluejays game. The calls were so inconsistent.outside corner pitches 3 inches off the plate would be called stikes for RSox pitchers and balls for Blue jays pitchers and vice versa.Same thing yesterday with the Halladay-Pedro matchup.Hopefully MLB gets rid of that garbage.

I agree with you in that the Questec system is horrible. But I think the bigger thing that needs to be addressed is the umpires strike zones. How is it that every umpire in the league has a different strike zone, and their "interpretation of it". Now granted, I understand that everyone has a little different plane of vision, but some guys strike zones are drastically different.

If machines could "umpire games", I'd be all for it.

Honestly, I have no real problem with umpires calling strike zones different from one another. I just want them to do it the same for EACH PITCHER.

Garbage like the "Greg Maddux corner strike" is a big part of the problem. Certain pitchers get calls while others don't. If an ump calls the zone differently from another ump, but does so consistently across all pitchers, the pitchers should be able to adapt.
