Ryu is arguably the best #3 starter in baseball.

The #4 slot is an issue, but the #4 starter (whoever he is) will only throw once in a playoff series. And the marginal benefit of upgrading the 4th starter by acquiring Price, Lester, or Hamels, wasn't really worth what those teams were reportedly asking for.

The Dodgers needed to add a bullpen ace though and they didn't do it. They should have pulled out the stops for Andrew Miller.

I'd say Anibal or Sonny Gray give Ryu a run for his money.

Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper were pulled back on revocable waivers after both players were claimed.

Why were they put on waivers anyway?

You'd be surprised how many big name players get put on waivers. You only really hear about it when another team tries to claim them.

What's the reasoning behind this though?

There's no downside so teams say what the hell.

While part of me tends to agree with your view here, I also see it as if you are running a quarter of a billion dollar payroll and it's basically World Series or bust, why start being frugal now?

Sure Ryu is a solid #3 and even did well in his playoff start last year, but if you can bump him to the #4, that's a huge advantage. It's no given that Kershaw/Greinke are always going to win their starts (and if anything the Cardinals proved that to be very prescient last year), so sometimes there is going to be a need for a #3 or #4 guy to swing an LCS by winning a pivotal Game 3/4/5 etc. The Dodgers couldn't do that last year with Ricky Nolsaco in Game 4. And if they get put in that same position again this year with Kevin Correia or Roberto Hernandez or the Corpse of Dan Haren facing off against Lackey or Fister or Sanchez or Gray etc...I do not like their chances.

All that said, the acquisitions of Correia and Carmona are more intended to hold off the Giants for the NL West and avoid a 1-game playoff than they are to win playoff starts.

Or Fister/Strasburg/Gonzalez/Zimm (whoever the #4 actually is of that group)
