Is this the best the NL has to offer?

the cincinatti reds, who have the best record in the NL, came to oakland to face the A's where most people expected the reds to continue their hottness and for griffey to get his 500 HRs he has wanted. these were the results:

    1. OAK 13, CIN 2

    2. OAK 10, CIN 6

    3. OAK 17, CIN 8

griffey did not homer at all in any of the 3 games. now dont get me wrong, the reds are a very good team, but is this seriously the best the NL has to offer? well according to the statistics it is. the a's totally tore their defense to shreds and i never had any hope in the A's batting lineup. i guess things just clicked, it might be just me. but what kills me, is that all the media and highlights keep talking about griffey when they show this game, and all three games griffey got shut down! the a's crushed em and all i keep hearing is griffey?! ya i mean its a big accomplishment, but what they SHOULD be talking about is how griffey got shut down.they should wait till he actually reaches 500 because the a's have no respect in the media because they are a small market team. its ridiculous. anyways, good job to the a's and the reds, nice series to both, but i didnt see what the fuss and hype was about in cincinatti. well, hopefully the reds will win in the national league, im hopin we will meet again in the world series . . . .

This just further emphasises the face that the Reds were overachieving.. They are not the best ball club in the National League, so don't speak down on the entire NL for one club's poor performance. They have a good lineup, but their rotation is what kills them.. as those high run totals indicate.

Also - keep in mind that much of the National League has injury woes, mostly the Cubs. Once everything gets sorted out, and teams get healthier, the Reds WON'T have the best record in the NL.

Look the Reds have been defying a disturbing trend for them. With their good record they still allowed more runs than they scored. Over a long curve everything plays out with the numbers. They are due for a big slide.

They offense is very good but you can't hide your pitching problems forever, so don't hurt yourself patting the A's on the back.

As much as it pains me to agree with a Cubs fan, Jistic is right.

Reds pitching is, has been, and will be their weak spot. Lidle had a VERY off night, as he is prone to doing. They called up a guy from AAA to start the second game, and Acevedo has been streaky his entire career... combine that with a porus defense and what do you have! Big numbers. Even after the large numbers 2 of the games became close again because of the Reds offense.

And now Larkin is down with an injury, so the defense gets even more problematic.

Assesing the Reds needs, to stay in the 'hunt', 2 - 3 top line pitchers, a 3rd baseman, and a catcher. I'm talking proven MLB players, not the AAA or AAAA players the are running out there now.

I'm a Reds fan, and I'll take all the wins I can get, but I still think at the end of the year it will be Cubs vs Astro's for the NL Central title, because good pitching wins over the long run!
