Boras said he'll test the free agent market after this season is over. Or so I read when there were rumors about Beltran here in San Diego.
I'll be interested to see how he adjusts to the NL. Look for him to struggle (at the plate) a little in his first couple of weeks here, then he'll turn it up.
Good thing he went to Houston, one he stays off the Dodgers roster (thankfully he'll have no part being on an NL West team), two the rumors in SD weren't good, I'm pretty sure the deal was shot done once KC's GM asked for Burroughs to be included.
All told, a great trade. Houston, thanks for taking Beltran, now I can stop reading those constant bs posts on ESPN about him.Comment

Doubt it.
Anyway - great deal for the 'Stros, IMO. This deal allows them to win now, and that seemed to be their goal for this season. Clemens only signed for one year, now Beltran for one, so if Houston is ever going to go far into October, this is the year to do it. Beltran brings so much to the table, and adds great defense, a switch hitting bat, and speed to that lineup.
The A's needed more bullpen help, so I can see why they got involved. Dotel will definitely help their cause.
When I first saw this deal, I thought KC got jipped big time. After reading the statlines and scouting reports of these prospects, however, it turned out to be a pretty good trade. Hopefully, all of these young men turn out to be pretty good ballplayers. They'll need to if they hope to fill Beltran's shoes.Comment

Great trade for all three teams. Now, I wish the O's front office can be this clever and pull something like this instead of trading one of our top pitching prospects for a 37 year old relief pitcher...Comment

Re: Astros acquire Beltran
Beltran will definitely not re-sign with the Astros. Hunsicker even admitted they couldn't afford him next season. Anyways, while Beltran is a huge upgrade offensively, one thing people aren't talking about is Houston's pen takes a major hit, unless they acquire someone else. Lidge takes over as closer, but he's never done it before, so who knows how he'll hold up. And now their setup corps got weaker, leaving them with guys like Miceli and Weathers. Not good. Unless they upgrade their pen, I can't see them even winning the division, let alone going far in October.Comment

Re: Astros acquire Beltran
I was thinking the same thing about Houston's pen but for now, I'd say this team got better. I'm pretty confident Lidge can close, its the set-up crew I'm not sold on.
And I'm glad Boston didn't deal for him, KC wanted too much: Youkilis, Shoppach, and Scot Williamson for a rental player is rediculous. And KC made out pretty good knowing they were trading a rental player and Dotel adds instant credibility to Oakland's pen. Now we just have to see if these players can produce like they're expected to.Comment
