Bonds is getting intentionally walked in his 3rd at-bat. Doug Davis doesn't want to be the guy to give up number 700

            he is the best ever
I agree with Jordan. I still think Ruth is the greatest player ever, but Bonds is right on his tail. One thing people forget about is Ruth's pitching stats. I'm guessing many haven't looked at them because his career pitching stats are impressive:

            W- 94
            L- 46
            ERA- 2.28
            IP- 1221.3
            BB-441
            K- 488

I also think Willie Mays is the best all around player ever. Bonds is also very close to him, but Mays had a much, much better arm than Bonds. Other than that, they're almost identical. Bonds has lost a few steps later in his career, but he's still a very good outfielder.

We could probably go back and forth on this forever though. It's just so difficult to compare different era's that ballplayers play in. The ballparks are different, equipment is different, size of the league is different etc...

            Anyhow, just my .02.

PS - I can't believe ESPN is not cutting into the WSOP to show Barry's AB's. I'm a little dissapointed in that. There's always Sportscenter though.

Bonds just got an outfield assist earlier today, gunned a guy out at home.

Giants just may win here, only two more strikes...

If Barry can finish his career without embarrassing himself like Mays did then I think he will be thought of as being better. Mays late in his career not only a few steps but almost everything! The last image of Mays was of an old man who couldn't even field well in the '72 WS.

I didn't mean to infer that Barry has a horrible arm in terms of strength (average IMO), but Mays had a very good one. I guess being a Pirate fan and watching Barry throw a 3 hopper from medium LF in the NLCS back in the early 90's as Sid Bream scored from 2nd has me doubting Barry's arm strength at times. To this day, I still can't believe he couldn't throw a guy out with 2 bad knees.

To his credit, Barry does have a very accurate arm. I just think it's average in terms of strength.

You've got a good point. When I think of Mays, I always think of him more in his prime and less at the end of his career.

I think it also says a lot about Barry's training. Which of course opens a whole other can of worms that I don't want to get into! Even without the entire steroid/HGH debate, ballplayers today have a much better awareness towards training IMO.
