Very easy choice for me, Jeter with his 4 GG and Ripkin with his 1 are not even in their class.

I get that...neither was the fielder that Smith/Vizquel were, but their offense more than made up for it. Wagner, on the other hand, was one of the best offensive players in history regardless of position and by all accounts an elite defensive player.

which is why i threw in the defensive equation in my post to begin with. ill take the guy being responcable for .5 a run a game and helping his team give up 0 runs a game, on a team that could put up 10+ over a guy putting up 2 runs a game but probably being responcable for giving up 2+ runs a game 100% of the time, wont even think twice about it. defensive SS have a bigger overall impact than offensive SS since day 1 in baseball and i dont see that trend ending anytime soon either.

No shortstop in the history of the game has ever prevented as much as half a run a game and no shortstop has ever even come close to giving up 2/runs game. Not sure if your numbers were made up, but the very best SS might save a run/week.
