I still can't believe how well the Cardinals have done in regards to how many people have been injured this year. It's probably easier to list all the people who haven't been significantly hurt.

What would be stupid is if somebody who literally sprints out everything gets out at second because he tried to get there on a dropped pop-up where he had no chance of getting there safely. So what did I used to do? I probably didn't sprint 100%, but it's more so because I wouldn't have been able to advance to the next bag. Otherwise, I did. Always assume a mistake will be made or someone is not paying attention. I (and my players) have scored tagging up on foul pop ups near a corner infielder for lack of attention. Catch them off-guard and humiliate the other side with your effort. It's awesome when you do.
And that's 100% the best way to teach it. It's what I do with my players as well. I teach controlled aggressiveness on the bases. I also coach high schoolers now. Being caught off-guard, mistakes, and humiliation is much more common at lower levels than higher levels.

This isn't a player that doesn't Hustle. Harper is one of the best baserunners and fielders in MLB. I don't get this at all i guess.

"the play the game the right way" is so tired.

I never thought people would be siding with Paplebon of all people but then again Harper is involved.
It was his entitlement after that threw me in for a loop. "**** you, I do what I want. I'm the hottest **** out there." That's what I got from him during the confrontation and post-game interview.

And best ability does not go hand-in-hand with most or consistent effort. I'm not saying the guy doesn't try, he wouldn't be up in the majors and being one of the best players out there if he didn't. I just hate seeing somebody at 22 years old already talking down to a veteran who knows his way or two around not only a clubhouse, but a World Series championship as well. He was also a part of the historic 2011 collapse, and probably knows a thing or two about leadership from a guy like Varitek. Harper is just doing it all wrong, IMO.

Leadership isn't contagious. Just because Papelbon has been around a clubhouse for a while, around good leaders, and won a championship does not make him a good leader.

I could be wrong, but I've never heard Papelbon associated with being a team leader.

I never once mentioned Papelbon is a leader. I said he has been around leaders before as well as a successful formula, and Harper may not be exhibiting that which is conducive for the entire team. Then you get Scherzer yelling at his manager as well, and although it was probably right for him to pitch to Gordon in that one game, you just don't show up a manager like that. Yes, Williams will be out of there... but there is something in the water there, and it has been stinking, as have been they.

Exactly. MLB replays are pathetic at times. I like having replays in the game, but hate when you clearly see the result of the play at home, but somehow the umps and the people in NY aren't able to see it.....

I mean Pillar slide into home, Wieters went for the tag, missed the tag, and Pillar was called out by who else...Joe West. They showed the replay, you see Wieters miss the tag. Not only that, if you look at Pillars pantleg where Wieters tried tagging him on, you could see it didn't move at all. Something that wouldn't have been the case had Wieters glove made contact with any part of Pillars leg. Thankfully this didn't have any impact on outcome of the game since Jays shut O's down in the 9th. But just hope something like this doesn't happen in playoffs. Can just see someone getting screwed out of a game/series by a bad replay call.

What do people here think? Safe or out?

Sorry, it sounded like you were insinuating that Papelbon was a leader by talking about how he's been around them.

It'll be interesting to see if Williams gets another manager position after this debacle of a season.

I'm sorry, but that people are lauding Papelbon is just idiotic. If not running out a popup is bad, how heinous and awful of a sin should choking a teammate be? You can't have it both ways...it can't be Harper handling himself poorly whereas his teammate is lionized for being a terribly douchey teammate that, remember, TRIED TO CHOKE OUT HIS TEAMMATE while a game was in progress. What planet are we on? This is loony and it's abundantly clear who the antagonist is here. Papelbon is garbage and enough already with this old-timey garbage-myth about running out every out like it's the last...not every player is Pete Rose and even Pete Rose didn't even do that. Good grief..
