And if that happens you get the pick after where you drafted the unsigned player. Like the Astros last year, they failed to sign Brady Aiken (1,1) in 2014 because they had some problems with his physicals. And last year they got the (1,2) as compensation for not signing him.
Ah, I wasn't aware that the 11th pick for the Mets was a compensation pick. Their argument holds a lot more water then. Still, I don't think the idea should be taken off the table entirely. The cutoff point for protected picks is kind of arbitrary; Seattle and Chicago had the same record, but Chicago's pick is protected. If the Tigers win 3 more games, then they're giving up their 1st and 2nd for Upton and Zimmerman instead of their 2nd and 3rd, which would a huge loss of pool money on top of losing a top pick.

        Jays-Donaldson reportedly agree to 2 year,29m deal.

Buys out 2 arbitration years, still under team control for a year after deal.

I think it's a good bridge contract type of thing. We all know Donaldson is a late bloomer so the new front office wants to see if he can keep up his production and then go long term depending on how he does.

No, lol. They're paying him slightly more for his arb years to gain cost control. There are no questions about if Donaldson is "legit."

Of course he's legit. Maybe I worded it wrong but thinking about it overnight and a bit today it's certainly a way to gain cost control. It all depends on what happens with Bautista/EE. Whatever happens with those two has a large say in just how much dough they're gonna throw Donaldson's way in a couple years.

I still like the deal though, it's pragmatic and shows that this front office is more flexible than Anthopoulos was.

Not really. He might've gotten less had we let him go to arb. From a strictly dollars point of view it might be an overpayment.

The goodwill of an extension and the cost certainty and those intangiblz make it sweet tho

If they would have signed Donaldson to a Toronto 5 year classic after winning arbitration last year, they could have had one of the best contracts in the game.

Crazy that Latos has fallen that far. He's one step away from a MiLB contract with an invite..

And that it happened so fast. He was a top 20 starter 3 seasons ago.

EDIT - "If and when" deal is done will be for 3 years, $40-$45 mil
