John Coppolella (Braves GM) on Simmons trade:

It's a very tough trade, and a painful trade for us...We didn't want to trade Andrelton Simmons. But we felt this was too good for us to pass up. We felt like we were getting so much talent back in this deal, that if we didn't make this trade, it would be very tough for us to keep going forward with our plans.

Aybar was a huge part of this deal. This wasn't just some kind of prospect trade. This was a value-for-value trade that had two really good prospects in it.

It would have been easy to not make this trade; it would have been easy to just say, 'Let me hold Simmons, because he's a fan favorite and he makes great plays.' But I want us to get better. I want us to have good young players filling our talent pipeline year in and year out.

I'm not afraid. Fans won't like this trade because they all love Simmons. I love Simmons, too. He's fun to watch play. We need more talent and we need to get better. This trade helps that happen.

It's hard though...especially when I got my neighbor playing their franchise across the street...maybe I will occupy myself with Glamore Magazine.

He also said that Simmons was a good character guy as well.. It makes sense. I guess because that is what this current brain trust wants to do. I guess us Braves fans just don't become to attach to a player because they are sure not. I cant say this is a formula of competing to win... Also, it looks like Fredi G is best manager they're going to get. No manager worth his weight would stand for this... But oh well! Who's next!

Prospects heading to Arizona. I don't understand why Philadelphia would do this for prospects. They obviously won't be contending next year, and Hellickson is a FA next year. Maybe they plan on extending him? I don't get it.

Phillies only gave up a 20 year old pitcher in rookie ball who was drafted in 2014. Not much for a guy who could bounceback and be traded for a decent prospect or be extended and stay.

Meh. There's not much to bounce back to. Hellickson's never really been any good.

Hope for some ERA luck, sell for profit

In 2011 and 2012 Hellickson looked like another quality arm to come out of the Rays' system; throwing 350-ish innings of 3.00 ERA ball. Those two years he significantly outperformed his xFIP due to a hilariously high strand rate. Then 2013 came and he got smacked by the law of averages and under-performed his xFIP. He got hurt in 2014 and traded to Arizona in 2015, where he put his the best K/9 and K/BB rate of his career, but was a bit homer prone. If he can rediscover his form from 2011/2012, then maybe the Phillies can sell high on him.

He's always gotten a decent amount of swinging strikes and his batted ball profile suggests he could be a 4.00ish ERA guy I guess. Just kind of a lackluster gamble but it's not like they gave anything up.

Ken Rosenthal reports the Braves are shopping Freddie Freeman, Julio Teheran, Nick Markakis, and Cameron Maybin.

The Sox should at least look at Freddie. Maybe Wren can help persuade DD into making something happen here.

I wouldn't mind Freddie. But I'm also willing to use the spring to see what Shaw*/Hanley can do at first.

*I acknowledge that Shaw's success was a HUGE anomaly, but you gotta give him an opportunity to prove himself.

I honestly don't want Freddie because of the prospect cost. That's not saying I want to keep all of our prospects either. It's just a deal for Freddie probably hinges on Devers+ and that's the same thing we should be using to get an ace like Gray or whoever else DD/Wren want to get. I think Hanley/Shaw can handle it. Would rather get Teheran or Miller if he becomes available.
