Re: 2015 MLB Hot Stove thread
We need to see more pitchers actually, PITCH rather than throwing gas and having unnaturally deceptive/disruptive deliveries because it's blowing their arms out at a terrible rate. There are other factors of course but we're just talking about the pitching aspect right now.
That's not to say that some guys can't get away with having completely messed up deliveries but at the end of the day time will catch up to them.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Two highly placed sources tell me Jose Fernandez is not being shopped or discussed to be shopped. Will that changes, who knows? #Marlins"Twelve at-bats is a pretty decent sample size." - Eric ByrnesComment

The Giants announced that they’ve signed shortstop Brandon Crawford to a six-year contract extension. The new deal will buy out Crawford’s final two arbitration seasons and four free-agent years, keeping him in San Francisco through 2021 — his age-34 season. Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports that he will receive $75MM and a full no-trade clause in the deal.Comment

Re: 2015 MLB Hot Stove thread
I want to address this catch 22 for a second. I think it's a bit of an untold tragedy that scouts and the SABR type people have become slaves to the radar gun to the point that you have kids in little league ball throwing with max effort all the time and growing up feeling the need to do so. That alone is a terrible trend but then you have the added problem of kids with some horrible mechanics being allowed to continue to put undue stress on their arms because youth and high school coaches don't quite have the expertise or knowledge to spot problems and tweak the mechanics.
We need to see more pitchers actually, PITCH rather than throwing gas and having unnaturally deceptive/disruptive deliveries because it's blowing their arms out at a terrible rate. There are other factors of course but we're just talking about the pitching aspect right now.
That's not to say that some guys can't get away with having completely messed up deliveries but at the end of the day time will catch up to them.
So do you teach mechanics that are good for longevity, and teach kids to pitch at 85-90%, but deal with less production?
I'll also say, with a little experience with scouting/recruiting, it's really hard to justify taking a kid who throws low 80s with solid mechanics over a kid that throws upper 80s but might have worse mechanics. It's likely always going to be that way.
Okay, back on topic.Comment

Re: 2015 MLB Hot Stove thread
I know how great Pollock is. I meant "LOL" as in there's no way Arizona was gonna do that, despite the prevailing truth that pitching is more important than hitting.
The funny thing is, pitching is more important than hitting, generally, but if you don't have hitting, you end up with 6 wins while pitching fantastic all year like Shelby Miller did.
Either way, it's another case of wanting to trade a guy who's 25, under control for a long time, who's actually ****ing been successful on the major league level, who's the guy you got in return for Jason Heyward, for no explicable reason. If you want offense, trade your prospects who haven't done jack **** yet. Every team is a sucker for those, not just you.
