I've listened to McCarver since I was a little kid watching the Mets on WOR and I really don't understand what everyone's problem is with him. The role of the color announcer is to colorfully provide insight into the game. I think this is something he does superbly... you may not agree with what he has to say, but at least he isn't afraid to say it. And coming from a guy who once caught Bob Gibson and enjoyed a career that nearly spanned 4 decades, I think I can state comfortably that he knows more about baseball than any person who posts on this forum.

I agree that he knows more about baseball than anyone on the boards, and he did have a long career catching some of the greats but that doesn't translate into him being a good color commentator. Some of the best announcers are guys who were not stars but sat on the bench and soaked up the enviroment of a MLB clubhouse. So his career really doesn't help him in being an announcer.

the best announcer would not do the following:

1) give benial information such as the color of the uniforms the team is wearing - yes Michael Kay, that is you..

2) give such overdecriptive accounts of baseball stats -ahem, Timmy...

or
3) not cover up the fact that they are "anti" a team & always talk about their teams constantly - Mr. Morgan..

gimme a Gary Colmen, Bob Murphy, David Justic, or Tony Gwynn any day..

Actually I don't find that to be a problem unless he does that during the TV broadcasts as well. It's a neat little touch on the radio and I find that most announcers will mention the uniform on the radio.

During the second game NYY vs MIN, keeping in mind that Santana blew the Yankees away the first game, Morgan has the nerve to say, "Well, I think the Twins can finally complete against the Yankees." I was thinking, have the Twins sucked the past few years? Man, what a naive comment to make.

I dont think i'll ever forget watching Deion throw that water on McCarver's head in the locker room. Timmy's "You're a class act, Deion! A real class act!" or something like that was priceless.

I like color commentators who give enough insight on the game to make me say "wow, i never thought of that." Currently the only 2 people that i know of in baseball that can do that are Jerry Remy (the sox color man) and Tony Gwynn, who did it several times thursday night. I'm sure there are plenty of other local and radio announcers around the league who are excellent but unfortunately i don't get the chance to hear them.

As for Chris Berman, i like the man but he shouldn't be doing baseball games. He gets distraced easily and goes off on stupid meaningless tangents during important parts of the game.

I really like Joe Morgan he generally sounds like he knows what he is talking about. But McCarver is horrible he is by far the worst announcer out there today for any sport. Some of the stuff he says is just plain stupid! Last night he made a reference about boxers never tearing there hamstrings, what is that this is a baseball game not a boxing match!
I also am not a big fan of Joe Buck, I know alot of poeple like him but I think he is kind of hung up on himself.
