Wait, now I'm confused. Is it that a team may decide to DH or not DH, or is it the home team that decides whether or not the DH will be used for both teams that game?

Because I was assuming it was the latter, but now I'm thinking it might be the former. I have never read up on the rule, except to find out that the DH must bat in place of the pitcher (whereas in softball and high school baseball, the designated player may bat for any position player on the field).

I don't know for sure, but based on the post above I was taking it as each team gets to choose if they want to use it.

Assuming a game where the DH rule is in play, an NL manager could just intentionally make a mistake in their lineup and "lose it" for the day right? I don't know why who chooses the DH even matters in this scenario, as long as its there, you can get out of it, you just couldn't use it when it's not in play already. Basically you always have the option if your team is allowed to use a DH.

          Re: The DH Argument....

Yes, if your DH is used as a defensive sub, the pitcher bats for the replaced player.

Say the Angels are hitting Mike Trout third and Cron is the DH batting fifth. If the bench was empty and Trout got hurt and Cron had to play OF, then the pitcher would bat #3.

If you were facing a lineup that was L-R-L , a manager could bring in a lefty for one batter, send bin to LF for the RHB, then put him back on the mound for the 2nd lefty. All without losing the DH, because the DH didn't play in the field.

And a manager doesn't have to make a mistake, he can just bat the pitcher. But why would he?

Maybe we're all looking at this DH Argument the wrong way.
Maybe instead of getting rid of the Designated Hitter,
we should get rid of the Designated Pitcher.
And just let the DH pitch.
I don't know, maybe I think too much. Or drink too much.

Most of us say or want the AL to have their DH rule intact. Just don't bring it over to the NL as well. Keep the leagues different in this way, I'm good with that.
These are pretty much my thoughts. I like that baseball has 2 unique leagues with unique rulesets. I don't want either league to be forced on the other, except when that team is playing at home vs a team from the other league.

I like the NL rules not because I like seeing a "lineup with bad hitters", but because I like seeing a lineup where your starting 9 are all forced to play. Not a situation where the pitcher is given a free pass and never has to face the opposing pitcher or where you can just stick a guy in the lineup because he swings hard but he's a mistake waiting to happen in the field.

Also, as a fan of a team that doesn't have a high payroll it would directly impact my viewing. You're essentially switching a bench player with a quality starter. That makes the financial situation of small-mid market teams much tighter.

Giants are playing in Oakland tonight and Bumgarner is taking his ABs.

First time in 40 years an NL team has forgone the DH rule and let the pitcher hit.

So it's really just better all around, Bumgarner could hit on the days he pitches and then DH on in between days if he wanted lol, it's a win win.
I've always said in an All Time Fantasy draft, I'd take PITCHER Babe Ruth #1 for this very reason.
