This isnt sad exactly. I have no sympathy for the guy. His estimation of usage after he retired is part of what led to this witch hunt for the current players. Seriously, Ken Caminiti, *1996 MVP. See what I mean? The people close to him likely knew his problems and had already started to confront this reality before it happened.

I never saw the guy at ST, but I'll take Towers's word for it... I remember when they invited him to the final weekend at the Q last year, it was a great moment, everyone cheered him each time his name was announced (and I think before the event he wasn't sure if he wanted to go because he didn't know how SD would accept him after admitting he used steroids).
Actually he was worried about the fan's reaction because he bad mouthed the city of San Diego after he left. He said he never really felt comfortable in San Diego and some other stuff that didn't sit too well with the fans. I can't remember everything off the top of my head, but I was pretty pissed when I read some of his comments after his departure.

But anyway, he was a great Padre in the time he spent in San Diego. This is just a sad end to a very troubled life.

And second can we go back to what this thread should be about-paying respect to a man who has just passed away, instead of sarcastically saying who will attend the funeral.

The man was a drug addict and a (recovering) alcaholic, a very destructive lifstyle for anyone, famous or not. He had a life most people can only dream about, being a Major League Baseball player, being an MVP and an All Star, even getting to play in the World Series. It is sad really, he had what most people would consider having it all, but it wasn't enough. As he said in that interview in 1994 that he believed his lifestyle would lead to his death as the next step, it appears he was right.
R.I.P Ken, thoughts and prayers go out to the Caminiti family.

Well, that being said, shouldn't he be considered as some sort of hero then? If not for him and his story in SI then would this whole steroid issue be at the forefront that it is now with players being tested?

I agree that it is hard to find sympathy for the man who made all of these terrible decisions, but he was addicted. I think he did try to quit, but these substances had such a stranglehold on him that he (and his body) couldn't do without them.

Let's not start with the asterisks, because if we do, you'll have to get your typing fingers loose to list all of the players that were on drugs/alcohol during their MVP seasons.

Let's just remember Cammy for all of the good things he brought to the game and the hard-nosed, intense player he was.

I agree with Squint. Cammi may not have been the poster boy for MLB, but his intensity as a player made him one of my favorite players. He made some poor decisions that many other professional atheletes make to try and get the edge, but there is no reason to discredit what he did on the field.

                      RIP Cammi and God bless.

He is, in part, why there is this massive effort to discredit the current players, most notably Bonds. The assertion that Bonds is/was on steroids is pure speculation while we know Caminiti was on steroids in 1996 but you dont see this effort to asterisk his MVP. And btw, why is Caminiti a bigger hero than Canseco? Also, why is it that when some one dies people are so uptight about being nicey-nice to them. He was a public figure. He was well paid for a job that makes him a public figure and was even more entrenched in this by the fact that he took steroids to put himself in the public spotlight. Its not as if this was your best friends father who had a job not in the public spotlight. Its not that people should be mean about him but they certainly be compelled to be dishonest about him. If you want tragedy look at what happened to Walter Payton. Now thats sad. The Ken Caminiti story not so much.

So then all those who like Caminiti for the reasons you mentioned should have no problems with Bonds assuming Bonds took steroids?
