Larkin has not been there thru thick and thin, he has moaned and compainled the last 4 years. He would have been back with the Reds but he didnt want to be a back up and he wouldnt play any position but ss. The Reds went to him and asked him to try 2b or 3b so he could be a utility player and he wouldnt do it. I live in Cincy and this was the best thing the team could have done. Remember they went thru the same thing with him last year and ended up giving in to him and singing him to a one year deal. You have to also remember he is 40 years old and they want to go another direction with a younger Felipe Lopez.

Re: Barry Larkins Future?
He's been the face of the Reds Organization. The least they could of done was tell him face to face, not over the phone. I'm disputing him being a pain in the @$$ the last couple of years. Yeah his best years are past him. This guy gave over 20 years to the Reds Organization & for them to do what they did was str8 out wrong. .Comment

Re: Barry Larkins Future?
Well in Cincy he hasnt been the face of the Reds for awhile, Sean Casey is!
Larkin was paid way too much 4 years ago when he got his 9 million a year contract and he was pretty much either hurnt or moaning about something for the whole 4 years. So yes it was time to let him go. I guess you think the GM was suppose to fly to his house and tell him to his face?! The Reds wanting Barry to be a back up and he didnt want to do it.ND Season Ticket Holder since '72.Comment

I say you let Larkin go out on his terms. Yeah, he's done a lot of moaning and complaining. And, the jury is still out on his role, if any, in getting McKeon fired a few years ago. But, he's been here 19 years. Sign him to a $700k, or whatever it was, deal again like this past year and let him be a player/coach.
There's no way they were going to give him a front-office job. He and John Allen do not like each other one bit. I say let the team sink. Maybe they'll be forced to make some major changes like the Bengals did. All they need to do now is trade Casey to REALLY tick everyone in this city off. I wouldn't put it past them to do it either. I hope they don't because I really like Casey.Last edited by SlimKibbles; 10-13-2004, 02:15 PM.MLB: Cincinnati Reds

Re: Barry Larkins Future?
So are we suppose to just keep doing this every year with Larkin just to make him happy cause he has been here 20 years? The Reds went thru the exact same thing last year with this guy. They ended up giving in to him and signing him to a one year deal and he said he would retire at the end of the year and go out a Red. Whats he do, cancels Barry Larkin day at the end of the year and says he wants to be a starter for one more year. Well guess what he is no longer an everyday SS, and he doesnt realize it!ND Season Ticket Holder since '72.Comment

Re: Barry Larkins Future?
Man, I saw this on ESPN yesterday that the Reds wouldn't resign him, and it's a terrible thing.. He's put so much into that franchise, and they just turn him loose.. Sure, his career has been on a decline for a couple years now, but I don't think you just let him go like that.. Maybe just keep him around as a mentor of sorts, ala Mark Grace..Comment

Re: Barry Larkins Future?
The Best thing for Larkin is to retire, he is no longer at the top of his game, he is of no use to other teams as a utility player since he can only play one position, i would rather remember Larkin as a Red than see him try and hang on with another team.Comment
