Re: 5/31 - 6/12 Game Discussion Thread
Saying that the Dodgers should "just go for it" implies that they can't win now or aren't trying to win now, both of which aren't true.
The projection systems had them penciled in as one of the best teams in the league entering the season and they've still actually played quite well even though it's not showing up in their overall record. And as you keep pointing out, they still have a massive payroll, so they clearly are putting their resources to use.
Again, as you already pointed out, they have. There are just better ways to spend the money than locking up the decline years of aging pitchers or lighting it on fire by getting bad closers and outfielders. Just because a team is wealthy doesn't mean they shouldn't find ways to find the best value with their money. People just need to adjust their expectations of how a high payroll team is going to build their team. We're using the resources to build a deep team with a bunch of above-average guys instead of buying the best 30 year olds around.
Oh, and this is probably where I should mention that the Dodgers are looking ahead to 2018, when Clayton Kershaw and Bryce Harper are simultaneously going to be free agents. The $300 million they didn't spend on Price or Greinke will go a long way to helping them get one or the other...or both.
The Dodgers have been rolling up division title after division title with the largest payrolls in the game's history...and they're letting Kershaw twist in the wind?
Yeah, I'd say they're nothing like the Angels, who are the real team in LA who aren't doing enough to help their superstar. It's basically Trout and the 24 dwarves there. They're one of the worst teams in baseball if it weren't for him.
My point is the Dodgers get to the playoffs, but it's odd they don't see the value of strengthening the #2 and #3 slots in the rotation to try to make a deeper run. In fact they took the opposite path, weakening their TOR by letting Greinke walk. Letting Greinke go made no sense for a supposed "win now" team with postseason aspirations. Saying they're conserving payroll for a run at Bryce Harper is even riskier than running up large payrolls in the present, imo. There's no guarantee he'll go there and to my knowledge has never been linked to LA other than his hometown being within driving distance. And what if coming up a bridesmaid to the Mets/Cards/Giants/etc all of these years makes Kershaw want to explore playing elsewhere?
Not building their team with an eye toward the postseason (quality pitching vs quantity pitching) is how they're letting Kershaw twist in the wind. Until they figure this out, they'll probably continue to be a pretty good regular season team and a disappointment in the playoffs.
