I don't get this play at all. Runner allowed to go to 2B because the Jays player was in the way during a run down? Gibbons got ejected afterwards. No surprise, this strange call made by who else...Vic Carpazza.

I did see Carpazza kind of smirking when he ejected Gibbons as well. Look, I know Jays fans (myself included) get a little over agitated by the umpires but i've seen a lot of this kind of crap from all umpires in different games. I mean these guys have way more power than any other official in sports. It's not a very healthy dynamic there.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

The rule states that an opposing player can't make contact with the runner on a rundown. Gibbons' main argument was that Lindor initiated the contact but that doesn't matter in the rule book.

In NBA the refs are the worst of all sports I see, but in MLB the umps seem to have biggest egos and talk back way more than other sports.Comment

If a defensive player physically impedes the runner's progress to or from a bag without the ball, then obstruction is signaled, and is a delayed dead ball (which means they will let the play complete itself before they make any decisions). The obstruction is active as long as the runner remains between the two bags it was called on in the first place, and the runner will be protected so long as it is active.
The difference is the runner isn't automatically granted the next bag. In softball, if the runner safely makes the trailing bag or is tagged out, the umpire decides whether or not the obstruction prevented the runner from advancing, and if he does not then the runner is sent back to the trailing bag. But if he believes that without obstruction the player would have made the bag (and we give the runner the benefit of the doubt in most instances), then he will be given the lead bag regardless (after the play is over).
In youth softball, obstruction does not have to be as physical as making contact though. Attempting a "fake tag" without the ball to get a runner to slide or raising up your arms for a fake "foul ball" to slow the runner down is also considered defensive obstruction, and is applied the same way.
Catcher's obstruction fits under the same category, only the batter is given incredible benefit of the doubt with the assumption their swing would have produced at least first base for them. Of course, it's also like a football penalty: the offense can choose to accept or decline the obstruction should it still be "active" (a reason they might decline is if the batter grounds out but scores a run, whereas the obstruction would plant them on first base and not move that runner from third... depending on the scenario, this may be what you want). Once the batter passes first base, the obstruction is nullified and everything is fair game once again.
I think the umpire called obstruction correctly, but depending on the MLB it looked as if he also killed the play and automatically awarded him second base, which would not necessarily be the case in NCAA baseball or softball (as I said, delayed dead ball and awarded one of the two bases that is deserved).
For the record, if you have the ball, you can do whatever the hell you want. You can lay down in front of the base if you want to. There is no obstruction so long as you have the ball. The last difference here is in softball, it is obstruction if you don't have the ball, whereas in baseball you are also protected by your body being drawn by a thrown ball to the path.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

...so, I think we're getting close to calling the Bartolo Colon experiment a failure. The guy hasn't had "stuff" for a few years, but he lived with pinpoint location/control. Now that he can't locate he's throwing BP out there...4-0 Houston and he hasn't recorded an out."People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. After Beltran/Correa went back to back, Joe Simpson and Chip Carey were wondering if they have the largest age gap to ever go back to back. I didn't even have to look it up...I think we've all see the footage of Griffey Jr and his dad going back to back in the 1990 season. I don't know if that one is the largest age gap, but at 20 years between Jr. and his dad it is definitely more than the Beltran/Correa gap (18 years)."People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. Look at that. The Phillies blow a 9-5 lead and now it's 9-9. Unreal.

Cano left the game with a strained quad. Hopefully he's ok. This string of injuries has been pretty rough for the Mariners.
Meanwhile Taylor Motter puts them up 10-9!Comment
