The thing is that when he is up, he is very good, but his down games are ugly.
As a Cubs fan, I would like to see them bring him back; so obviously I think it is a pretty good pick up for Toronto...they just better find some bats, or a new division...
I'm a little bit worried about his back problems that he had last last season. But a medical checkup should clear everything up.

I wonder if the Cubs will offer arbitration? There's no way I see the Cubs brining him back at the price tag of probably 6-6.5 mil as the 5th starter when they already of Prior, Zambrano, Wood, and Maddux. The Cubs are better off spending that money on a bat. But at the same time the Cubs could get a pick if they offered arbitration assuming Clement doesn't re-up like what Maddux did with the Braves.

But I agree even with Clement the Jays need at least 2 bats (assuming Delgado is gone). I would like to see Koskie get signed and a trade with the Reds for Kearns.

Well there were rumours earlier this fall that Hinske would get traded to the Reds so hopefully that happens.

Clement says he wants to sign with the Jays mainly because of our incoming pitching coach Brad Arnsbourg who he worked well with in Florida.

IMO Clement is a bit of an enigma. He can be absolutely lights out one night and then a complete wreck his next outing. He has an excellent sinking fastball and hard slider, but if he gets that FB up, watch out. Typically he needs a good thick infield grass to be real effective and I think Blue Jays stadium is turf? That might not mean anything, but it's food for thought.

On a side note, I faced Clement a few times in HS ball. He wasn't very polished back then and only pitched his Sr year. Threw hard, but could never find the plate and often hit a lot of batters. Very nice guy though.

He's actually fairly consistent, just consistently mediocre. He only had 2 starts last year where he let up 5 runs or more. He was terrible over the last 2 months however, allowing 26 runs in 38.1 innings.

The Cubs and the Jays have a similar park factor but the Jays do play on Turf which makes it harder for defenders to gobble up ground balls. Clement is a ground-ball pitcher.

But the Jays defence up the middle should be good with Russ Adams and Orlando Hudson. I don't know what's going to happen with the 1B and 3B position though.

I still like the idea of Clement coming to the Jays as he's been ignored so far in the FA market. Pedro, Radke, and Pavano are the one's always getting mentioned and numerous people have said Lieber is the real sleeper. Clement has the high potential of being under-valued.

More or less what I meant was that he has the ability to go out and pitch 7 innings and can give up 3-4 hits, 0 runs with 8+k's one night and then the next time he's out he might only go 5 innings, 4 runs and will walk 5-6 hitters.

I think Clement could be a very good middle of the rotation pitcher, but he just needs to learn to command his pitches better. From that game log he had a few real good games, but he also had some pretty subpar performances. It's like you never know what you'll get with the guy.

Actually you could argue most pitcher in MLB are streaky where they can one good game and the next game was a subpar or poor one.

Just looking at last year only 6 pitchers (Santana, Schilling, Johnson, Sheets, Clemons, and Pavano) had a win share total of 20 or higher. Clement last season had a win share total of 11 tieing him for 22nd in NL starting pitchers and if you included AL starting pitchers also Clement was tied for 37th in MLB. This data indicates you could make a strong case Clement is a 2 number rotation pitcher.
