I think Clement could be a very good middle of the rotation pitcher, but he just needs to learn to command his pitches better. From that game log he had a few real good games, but he also had some pretty subpar performances. It's like you never know what you'll get with the guy.
Actually you could argue most pitcher in MLB are streaky where they can one good game and the next game was a subpar or poor one.

Just looking at last year only 6 pitchers (Santana, Schilling, Johnson, Sheets, Clemons, and Pavano) had a win share total of 20 or higher. Clement last season had a win share total of 11 tieing him for 22nd in NL starting pitchers and if you included AL starting pitchers also Clement was tied for 37th in MLB. This data indicates you could make a strong case Clement is a 2 number rotation pitcher.

He definately could be a #2 starter, but I'd like to see how he fares outside of Wrigley first. I know they have high infield grass which helped Clement. The wind at Wrigley also played a factor. If he was getting his sinking fastball up in the zone and the wind was blowing in, no big deal. Up and wind blowing out would be bad of course.

Of course when I'd like to see ballpark adjusted figures, I can't find them!! I guess I'd just really like to see how Clement does away from Wrigley. If you check out his splits, he's certainly not the same pitcher away from Wrigley:

      http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/player...s?statsId=6099

He pitched a lot less innings on the road and still almost gave up the same number of runs. However, he also gave up more HR's and a higher SLG % at Wrigley. Odd...

His ballpark adjusted figures are already on that ESPN page if you're just looking at home and away data. His numbers are solid away from Wrigley.

This would be a good signing for the Blue Jays, it would give them a solid #2 behind Roy Halladay. J.P. Ricciardi seems to do pretty well when signing free agents (Miguel Batista not withstanding), since it does appear Carlos Delgado is not going to return (the Seattle Mariners are reportedly set to offer him a 4yr deal) signing a strong starter would be the way to go.

On a side note, a few of rumors floating around: if Delgado signs elsewhere John Olerud may return to Toronto to play 1B and finish his career. with no power threat in the lineup the Jays are also said to be one of two teams interested in Juan Gonzalez (Oakland being the second), Gonzalez would likely be the DH in Toronto. Toronto is said to be one of the many teams interested in Troy Glaus, the list also includes: Anaheim, Arizona, Boston, Detroit, Los Angeles and others.

I didn't even see that. I was looking at his numbers last year away from Wrigley and they weren't that great IMO. However, his career numbers away from Wrigley (which I didn't see until moments ago) are pretty good. That's a more telling sign of course.

Oye rsox don't stab me like that! If the Jays sign Juan Gonzalez then i'm going to cry and not for joy. It would be nice to see Johnny O back in a Jays uniform tho the last "sentimental" signing didn't do too well. (Hentgen)

Troy Glaus would fit well in the Jays lineup tho I really want Koskie on the team. I guess that's not happening anymore.

Clement eh, the Padres sure could've used him instead of Eaton the last three years. But hey, at least his whole trade line got us Ramon Hernandez. Anywho, this would be a good move for the Blue Jays, while Clement isn't an ace-type pitcher, he can eat innings. I'd say he's a solid starter now than he was here in San Diego.

Clement should be a good signing because the fate of the season should not be on his shoulders in Toronot. If all goes well, he becomes the third starter behind Halladay and Lilly. In 2002 and 2003 I said Halladay had the best stuff out of anyone in the American League. Hopefully for him, last year was an aberration and Lilly continues to improve which would give Toronto a pretty nice rotation.

Of course, all of this could be meaningless if they continue to not hit and have poor relief pitching next year.
