Very fair question, my guess is they laid all their eggs in the basket of having him included with Gray but couldn't get what they wanted back and ultimately left him off.

Guess the Astros and Tigers are kicking the tires on Justin Verlander once more.

You can't trade a guy after July 31st unless they pass waivers. I'm sure there are plenty of guys that are put on waivers and claimed, we just never know about it because the team just pulls them back. It's a possible strategy to keep an opponent from getting a player to put a claim on that player and essentially block a trade to a competitor.

The Cubs put a claim on Cole Hamels a few years ago when he was with the Phillies. They didn't work out a trade so Hamels stayed with Philly.

I have 0 idea where you got this from but it's definitely not true. Like JR said, guys are claimed but we never hear about it because the player is pulled back by his team or the 2 teams can never work out a deal in the couple days that's given to make a trade. Also like JR said teams will claim a guy just because so they can block a better team from getting him. I heard this from someone yesterday or the day before but the reason why Alonso went to the Mariners over a team like the Yankees or whoever is because the Mariners are higher up in the waiver wire order than the Yankees.

The Pirates claimed Sean Rodriguez when the Braves put him on revocable waivers. That's how that trade last week got started.

They also outright claimed Kontos from the Giants.

Mets trade Jay Bruce to the Indians for Ryder Ryan. Hopefully we see drunk Jay Bruce again.

We traded $1 to the Cubs a couple years back for Tony Zych, so these things have worked out for us before.

Giancarlo Stanton cleared revocable waivers. While, it's not clear that he'll be traded, Jeff Passan suggests there are scenarios in which he could be dealt. Lets see what happens.

I doubt it happens unless the Jeter group doesn't have the funds or the desire to keep such a highly paid guy on the roster. Actually i've heard some rather interesting things about that ownership group that potentially doesn't bode well.
