Re: 2017-2018 MLB Hot Stove Thread
Are you serious? So, you would give away the potential of an Andruw Jones type of player for 10 years for 4-5 sure years of Yelich type of player? I couldn't do it...Yelich is a really, really nice player, but IMO you don't trade prospects like Acuna unless it brings you back THE missing piece that makes you a World Series contender right now. Yelich doesn't do that at all for us."People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring." - Rogers HornsbyComment

Just preference of course. I do this deal 8/10 times. Depends on the rest of the package of course, but you could sway me almost 80% of the time in this deal.

The only thing I am disagreeing with is the 10 years part. You get Yelich for I believe 5 seasons, and once Acuna is up you only guarantee get him for 6 years. You have an almost guaranteed all-star in Yelich under very cheap, or you could bank that Acuna will pan out and be as good as Yelich over the time he is in Atlanta.

If Acuna emerges as we hope, I'd really like to do what the Pirates did with McCutchen, lock him into a team-friendly long-term deal really, really quick into his career.Comment

This isn't a knock on him because Yellich is a solid player, but he's not the guy you build a franchise around. He's a borderline all-star at a position that has a lot of competition for that AS spot. Clearly he's no slouch. He's also on a team friendly deal for the next 4 years. He's not Mike Trout though. Acuna's deal will be even more friendly for at least the first few years, and his ceiling is that of a franchise cornerstone.
He could still be a swing in a miss, but Acuna for Yellich doesn't make any sense (even before you start tacking on additional top prospects). Acuna is set to make his MLB debut early in the 2018 season too, so it's not like the Braves would be trading away some to prospect who won't see the majors for another 2-3 years.
Yellich doesn't make this team a WS contender in 2018. So you've already lost 1 of his team friendly deal years. So, really you're saying 3 years of Yellich before he has to get paid for 6 years of Acuna. Easy choice imo.
I would love to see the Braves swing a deal for him, but you don't get better by trading a potential franchise player about to make his MLB debut for someone who has never been an all-star. Especially when your team is still more than just 1 piece away.Last edited by KSUowls; 01-19-2018, 11:22 AM.Comment

Re: 2017-2018 MLB Hot Stove Thread
The Braves were ready to push for a playoff spot next season, then I'd understand a Yelich for Acuna trade from the point of risk mitigation. Braves are likely pushing in 2019 though. They would be better off trying to take advantage of the stagnated FA market and fill some holes.
If I'm the Marlins, I am asking for at least a Eaton package for Yelich.Comment

The Jays are among 1 of 6 teams in on Yellich discussions. Apparently the starting point for such a trade is Bo Bichette. I'd be a little bummed out but I think trading him wouldn't hurt in the long run because Yellich is quite talented and is controllable for 5 more years. The issue is, it won't be just a one for one swap and the Marlins are eying other players in the Jays farm system that I don't think they exactly want to ship out.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club
