      3 years $75MM

They definitely paid a premium for a shorter deal.

Nice to see Philly competing again, too big a franchise to be tanking. Life isn't getting any easier for the Marlins! The NL East looks like the division to watch this year

They may have paid a premium but I think this is going to work out nicely for both sides.

Now if only they can bring Trout over there.

Sounds like 25M per year in that deal.

            lol

Well, Alex Cobb can still sign with STL, can't he? I'm so good with predictions, it hurts.

Still feel this way, but I guess Phillies did what they needed to close a deal with a guy they probably thought of as a long shot at the start of the offseason.

A shorter "we are here" sort of Jayson Werth type of deal.

kinda shocked Arrieta didn't get more years but AAV is a fair deal.

Any other year he probably does.

                    Thanks for everything Jake.

He’s been trending downwards for a couple years now. Obviously a couple amazing seasons previous to that though.

Arrieta has an opt-out after 2019.

According to MLB Network insider Jon Heyman, Arrieta will make $30 million in 2018, $25 million in 2019 and $20 million in 2020. Heyman also reported that the Phillies can void the opt-out by initiating a two-year extension that starts at $20 million per year, rises to $25 million based on games started in the first two years or up to $30 million based on Cy Young finishes. In all, the deal could reach five years and be worth $125 million to $135 million

Big time meh on Arrieta to the Phillies. He gets his dollar amount per year but it's a short contract so it's probably not too bad for the Phillies. I'm not a major believer in Arrieta anyway.

It's "nice" to see the Phillies finally decide to field a major league team, however. One less team with this losing on purpose garbage.

The Phillies did not lose on purpose. That is laughable. Why are you always so negative?

Yeah, I think the Phillies was more of a situation of all their veterans all getting old at the same time and them not quite having the young talent ready to step up. They had to do a rebuild on the fly but it wasn't on the order of what the Cubs and Astros went through and what the Rays are currently doing.

To say the Phils were losing "on purpose" is missing the point in a lot of ways.

Any way you wanna call it, it's the same premise for everyone now.

Though I will grant that they didn't *quite* go so low and blatant like what the Cubs, Astros, Braves, etc have done.
