Re: 2017-2018 MLB Hot Stove Thread

    A couple of notes:

    - JP Morosi reporting that the Braves have re-engaged talks with the Marlins, this time regarding a deal for both Yelich and Realmuto. Nothing has progressed so far and reading different industry folks no one expects the Braves will do it for a few reasons. One is that the pieces coming back to Atlanta are just not what they need right now (Yelich is an upgrade to Markakis, but not worth selling the farm for...Flowers/Suzuki were a great combo at C in 2017) and experts don't believe that Atlanta will part with the prospects the Marlins will ask for. The other reason is that they don't expect the Marlins to give a divisional foe a "break" on a trade.

    - It's looking more and more like the Dodgers won't be able to trade Matt Kemp and at this point there is talk they will keep him on their roster and go into Spring Training with plans to platoon him in LF with Joc Pederson. That would be interesting...

      .
Yellich, Inciarte, Acuna in the outfield. I could get used to that. Then add Realmutto behind the plate for the next 4-5 years. Man that would be awesome to see. Unfortunately we would probably go from one of the top farm systems to one of the worst, and we need pitching above bats.

I think Yelich comes down to Atlanta and Philly. Personally(bias aside) think Atlanta makes more sense. Maybe a package of Wright, Soroka, Ruiz and Waters could do it. Dont think they have to include Acuna or Albies

However it comes down to what Miami wants in prospects. Do they want pitching prospects (Atlanta) or position player prospects (Philly)

I'm gonna guess that Acuna is any deal for Christian Yelich and definitely one for Realmuto and Yelich.

You'd be wrong. Acuna is going nowhere.

According to several sources, Atlanta has said Acuna is untouchable. Rumor has it any deal will involve two of Allard, Wright, Soroka, or Anderson plus minor prospect add ons.

If it happens, it will be interesting. The AJC is also saying that there could be a possibility that Markakis is swapped back to the Marlins and that Atlanta takes Martin Prado to offset the salary. It would also give the Braves another option at 3B. Sounds like a lot of ideas being discussed, but I will believe it when I see it.

On the topic of slow markets, the guys on MLB Tonight were discussing how the luxury tax is really acting like a salary cap right now. It's keeping teams from wanting to add payroll. Combine that with GM's who have come to realize what a poor return you get on FA's for the money you put into them, you get the market we are seeing right now.

If the players are smart they would say to the owners "Okay, we know you guys want some kind of system in place that would mostly allow every team a competitive chance so instead of a luxury cap how about a salary floor so that every team has to spend x amount of dollars.

Hell, they could give the owners their cake and eat it to by amending the luxury cap in such a way that after a certain spending limit they'll be hit with the tax BUT there will be ways to go over it with a baseball version of the Bird Rule where you can go over the cap to keep a prized free agent.

I dunno, just some food for thought on my end. You'd almost think what we're seeing here is collusion but knowing baseball's history with the C word I doubt that's whats going on here.
