Re: Looks like Delgado is going to be a Mariner

As a huge M's fan I would love for Delgado to play here. But, the M's also want to bring in Sexson, he grew up in Washington State, about 15 minutes from my house, he is good friend with M's manager Mike Hargrove (from his days in Cleveland) and would be willing to play left field. I think one or the other is fine, but both would be way to much money. Plus, the M's are the frontrunners to get Corey Koskie for third base. Thats alot of money to shell out for a team that also needs a good starting pitcher.

Considering that the Blue Jays have a limited budget and a fear of losing potentially good players, I find no fault in J.P. starting the clock on Hinske's contract.

It looks worse now because Hinske ended up being a bust. But, if Hinske was indeed the .300-30-100 guy he was predicted to become, he would have ended up being a steal at the price J.P. locked him up to.
The fact that he has become a bust is the exact reason why the contract extension was a mistake. It doesn't matter if people thought it was a good deal at the time, the bottom line is that it hasn't panned out in the Jays favour.

It's like investing in a Subway franchise that had a lot new houses/apartment being built around it, only to find out 2 years later from some reason there's been a huge increase in crime around your store which has hurt sales. It doesn't matter if the investment looked good at the time, what matters is that you lost money on the deal.

But, no one can tell the future.

Would you prefer that J.P. be conservative and worry about the what if's instead of making a decision on a player that had tremendous upside (and might still have some)?

And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

I actually like JP to be aggressive but not give a 5 year extension after a players rookie season.
