Re: 5/7 - 5/20 Game Discussion Thread
I'm behind on this Braves game, so I'm just going to say... dat replay system doe.
They get like less than 35% of their challenges overturned. That is incredulous.
EDIT: To add onto what kehlis said, I heard only about 50% of all challenges have been overturned this year. That number seems really strange. I get that sometimes managers say: "Hey let's just try it out and see what they say." You'd think though that if they're getting the green light to do so often enough that it's because it's something that was called incorrectly. And frankly, it mostly is incorrectly called but they aren't doing anything about it at NY.
There needs to be much, much more transparency with this system, or the explanation of the calls on the field (even if they stand). Umpires aren't even bothering looking at the scoreboard replay themselves anymore because they know their opinion means jack squat. It's like turning a blind eye to this entire thing.Last edited by Blzer; 05-19-2018, 06:04 AM.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Every manager is asking for a challenge because they saw video replay that made it obvious the call should be overturned.
And we sit at home, see these same replays and all think, yep it's getting overturned.
But here we are, and 50% of the time it's not. The system is broken.

Personally, I wish they would do away with the "centralized" replay center have it all done at the ball park with a 5th umpire sitting up in a booth. In fact, here is really what I'd like to see:
- The 5th umpire sits in a booth and is constant communication with each umpire on the field (and vice versa). He is essentially a part of the crew with all of the camera feeds in front of him. If an umpire on the field isn't sure about a call, he asks the 5th umpire for help (this is all done without walking over to a head piece/ear phone). The 5th umpire reviews it quickly and makes the best call possible which is then made on the field.
- If at any point a field umpire has made a call and a manager wants to appeal to the 5th umpire, they can ask for that (just like a manger walking out and asking an umpire to get help). There is no limit, no gimmicky number...just, hey, can you check with the booth on that call? The field up then asks the booth ump and it either stands or is reversed.
I think this system would be seamless 95% of the time. Sure, there would be a bang-bang play that the booth ump has to analyze for a minute or so, but as long as the field umps had a signal that made it clear to everyone in the park that they have signaled the booth to review I think it would be fine."People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball.
