I don't think it's a lack of confidence in his sinker that has hurt Lowe (though it may be a lack of confidence in his offspeed pitches) but more a case of hitters making adjustments. Lowe could throw that sinker low and outside the strike zone and get guys to either swing and miss or hit it into the ground with more frequency in his 20 win season. Hitters are laying off that pitch now and the result is an increase in walk totals. And as good as Jason Varitek is at calling a game, I don't think he handles Lowe very well. Aside from the last two starts Lowe made in the playoffs, he rarely would call for a breaking ball and hardly ever calls for that sinker over the inside corner to lefties. That was a money pitch for Lowe as a closer and in '02 but he's gotten away from it. If he could improve his changeup a little too that would help.

Originally posted by rsoxThe Tigers and Derek Lowe have had a mutual interest in eachother and with the Red Sox signing David Wells and Pedro Martinez expected to sign any day now it looks like Lowe will not be coming back to Boston. Detroit would be good place for Lowe-big ball park, good defense up the middle and getting to work with Ivan Rodriguez. If he regains confidence in his sinker and shows good command he could easiley be a 20 game-winner again.

I think people should quit making excuses as to why he doesn't deserve his money...I remember when he was an Expo he was preety inconsistent, but you could see he had some potential. He's had 2 good years with the Fish,so the idea that he's a 1 year wonder is false IMO...
And the National League factor is a weak argument IMO.Does that mean that Prior is overrated?Or Maddux or RJ or Schmidt...Comment

Re: Pavano a Yankee
1 yr fluke? Did you see him help us win the WS the yr b4? I'm sry but to label him a fluke when he has a ring that he basically carried us to with the exception of Beckett in game 6 of the WS is just absurd.President of the Devils Den
