    Re: 7/2 - 7/15 Game Discussion Thread

At first when I read the post about Javy Baez as a choice for NL MVP, I was like "nah." He strikes out too much. He's too streaky. Bryant and Rizzo are usually better options on his own team.

But, then I thought about it, and although it probably won't happen, it seems more reasonable. Obviously he's been hitting this year. He's in the NL top 10 in HR, RBI, and runs scored. Some of the usual suspects (Bryant, Harper, Goldschmidt) are coming from way behind.

His defense is always highlight-reel although he's been a bit more erratic on defense this year. And that shows in his defensive metrics (slightly negative UZR score, slightly positive DRS score). He makes plays that nobody else does though.

One thing about Javy that gets overlooked unless you watch a lot of Cubs broadcasts (especially the home feed with Len and Jim) is his baserunning. Javier Baez--for my money--might be the best baserunner in baseball. He's won the Cubs games in the past with his instincts and daring on the bases. Unlike on defense, he almost never makes mistakes while running the bases. One of the byproducts of this is he has a speed score of 8.7 (tops in baseball and above Billy Hamilton!). Now, Javy is fast, but a speed score this high is more a result of taking extra bases whenever possible. And being really successful at it.

Not sure why Acuna was just walking up the 1B line but it worked out.

        Good game to watch.

Javy's progression has been really cool to watch. He obviously has pretty much every physical tool in the box, fantastics hands (come into play both offensively and defensively), above average power, great arm, and relatively fast. He dominated the minors simply because he was better than everyone, when he came up in 2014 you could tell that he had potential, and even though he hit .169 and struck out 40% of the time, he was fun to watch because of his huge swing and highlight real defense. He just played soooo aggressively that it hurt him once he faced big league players.

2015 some of the bleacher creatures start whispering to trade him before he loses that top prospect status....but the Cubs stick with him, send him to Iowa to start the season, where he makes many adjustments. I think an injury set him back around the all-star break....if I remember the Cubs wanted to call him up for there brief AL roadtrip to DH, but he got hurt right before....so they called up Schwarber which obviously worked out quite while for them. You sort of wonder what Javy could have done for that 2015 team if he could've gotten called up before September....even though he was still a work in progress....in his brief stint before the playoffs he hit .289/.325/.408, definitely a toned down version of 2014 Javy.

These past 3 seasons Joe Maddon has seemed to "unleash" the old Javy a little bit at a time while he gets more AB's in the bigs. What's scary is this still may not be the final product. He's only 25 and even this year he has made the adjustment to draw a few more walks....recently....he did have that ~150 PA stretch without a walk, but I think he's taken a few since then

Sorry to everyone else for so many posts about the Cubs when they aren't even playing tonight

That's the most underrated part of Javy's game. He's the best baserunner in the game in my mind. His combination of aggressiveness, sliding ability, and instincts are second to none and make up for his shortcomings at the plate.

Because in real baseball parks that is probably a pop out.

LOL. I tried to make a 2018 Cubs team thread, but nobody would post in it. Instead, all of Cubdom is using the biweekly threads as a place to talk about everything, game related and not.

Tonight should be emotional seeing Jose back in town. I hope the crowd gives him a long and heartfelt standing O.
