I want to start a petition and collect signatures to move all Sonny Gray starts to 1 PM during the week so that Yankees fans at work are not subjected to watching them.

Speaking of...another bizarre statement by Darvish yesterday in response to the A-Rod comments. Here's the bizarre part:

Originally posted by Cubs dot com
During ESPN's Sunday night telecast, Alex Rodriguez was critical of Darvish.

"When you have a guy that signed an enormous contract, and is sitting down, and you walk in the training room and he's got two trainers working on him, you should be in Arizona somewhere getting treated," Rodriguez said during the broadcast.

When asked about it, Darvish laughed.

"Honestly, it doesn't matter what he thinks of me because I still have a lot of respect for A-Rod," Darvish said.

Is Darvish a problem in the Cubs' clubhouse?

"I honestly don't know," Darvish said, "But [Anthony] Rizzo gave me a big hug and told me, 'I love you.' I'm not actually sure if he means it or not."

                So, he isn't mad?

"I get mad, especially when my son doesn't brush his teeth or is hiding and playing games when he's not supposed to," Darvish said.

Manager Joe Maddon was upset, saying that Darvish took it better than the manager did.

"It seemed like it was plastic, it was rehearsed," Maddon said of Rodriguez's comments.

"You permit somebody in to your space and they walk out with that," Maddon said. "A line I've always had is, 'Don't permit anyone to contaminate your space and don't dare to contaminate ours as a group.' All those thoughts came rushing through to me when I had a chance to fully digest the whole thing."

Maddon said he would not talk about the matter again. He did caution Rodriguez the next time he approaches a player.

"To do something like that in a premeditated way, to walk into another locker room, I'd have to believe that you as baseball players -- and we're not talking about life or death, we're talking about a game -- but all of a sudden people will be on their toes a little more and the hair on their backs raised, and you better be careful," Maddon said.

"I definitely believe it was an ambush," Maddon said. "I don't know how [Rodriguez] came to that. It wasn't just made up that day or hit him on that spot. This was rehearsed for at least a week."
Couple of things...first, what's with that little aside about "not knowing if Rizzo means it or not" ? It just seems like a weird little aside given the situation being about a rift between Darvish and the Cubs.

Also, it seems like Joe Maddon is way more upset that the sanctity of his clubhouse was violated rather than that he actually disagrees with anything A-Rod had to say about Darvish losing respect, controlling his own rehab, etc.

Really Arod? You are the last person in the world that should be judging anybody about missing games.

All the bs you put the Yankees organization through.

I do find that more than a little ironic, but I don't altogether dismiss what he has to say. By all accounts, he seems very well connected and the Cubs have basically confirmed he's had recent access to their clubhouse (hence the jilted Joe Maddon routine above). But, yeah, A-Rod trying to claim the moral high ground about anything is....well, this is the world we live in apparently.

Really don't think anyone should try and analyse or read into the specifics of a comment made by Darvish as it's all through an interpreter and you don't know the tone of how it as said or any cultural differences that might be relevant. He may have said it jokingly, he may have said it to be humble, maybe in Japan it's common to talk like that, etc etc etc.

Also, most of what all sportsmen say to people is just an attempt to say absolutely nothing at all, while sounding pleasant, so I doubt he meant anything by it at all. He's just trying to brush it off and make the story go away so he can concentrate on getting healthy.

If he wanted to say anything remotely controversial then he could easily savage A.Rod as he's in an absolutely terrible position to be taking shots at players. I personally wouldn't take any **** from him, but maybe Darvish is a bit more polite than I am!

It's actually pretty easy for me to discount what he has to say. Cubs welcomed back a guy that straight out refused to go to the Minors and not only that he's one of the leaders on the team now. So you think there trouble in the clubhouse over a dude that has a legit injury and the rehab is in question yeah I don't buy it especially by a guy that's only there a couple times a year.

There might be some merit to what Arod said. But coming from him it just immediately has me rolling my eyes. It shouldn't come from anybody in that broadcast anyway.

If it would have come from a Cubs player or someone in that organization. Then I'd pay more attention to it.

So, because Tommy La Stella did his penance and is one of the guys now that somehow means there's no issues with Yu Darvish and the team? I think that reasoning is even more easily discounted because it's not only a bad comparison but has zero to do with the current situation. La Stella and Darvish have totally different personalities, totally different expectations. TLS had also been a member of the team for a while before that whole 'not wanting to get stashed at AAA' thing happened. He's performed quite well since then, which never hurts earning back respect.

All the current team really knows of Darvish is he has a clean MRI, but variable levels of pain, and that he's making a lot of money to be there. Maybe the players/coaches/Theo/Jeddie really do like him, but I'm getting a somewhat different (albeit somewhat overblown) feeling about it.

I think he'll do better there. Texas isn't a good place to pitch. He's better on the road. FIP says by quite a bit too.
