Maddons lineup shenanigans going into 2017 set the team back 20+ games that year.
while I'm not a fan of Maddon's anymore he's so far down the list of problems. and That's simply not true.

Q trade is what it is but it's only made Worse because Quintana was a legit #2 starter at the time of the trade. people want to pretend he wasn't but he was it's just that he's turned into more of a 4 now.

Darvish was fine if it didn't set them back from make additional moves and it really didn't that's where Ricketts come in and try to say they have no money. when healthy he was a high end 2 with one of the highest strikeout rates in MLB. remember the Darvish signing was before Hamels trade. to say it made no sense doesn't ring true. It just hasn't worked out yet.

The mistake this offseason was for a budget capped team how do you bring back Hamels on a 20 Mil dollar option when you could've gotten him at a lower cost and probably added a couple relievers.

You mean the team that coughed up the division in game 163 at home? And scored 1 run in 13 innings at home in the wild card game loss? That 95-win team seemed to give up late in the season. Or maybe it was simply about as good as the team we're seeing now. The one with the worst ERA (8.32) in baseball. The one with a full negative 1.0 pitching WAR in just 7 games. The one with the worst walk rate (7.22 /9). The one that made 6 errors and got shutout 8-0 to be only the 5th team in 50 years to accomplish such a horrifically unprofessional effort. The team that has put its manager on notice about how they frankly don't think he's doing his job to the best of his ability--hence no contract extension and the re-dedication to mentoring players and improving from within.

Funny thing is people will say you can't predict this or it's just a few games. But, having the best starting rotation of 2013 in the year 2019 and a bullpen full of 7th inning guys who can't throw strikes, this actually was pretty predictable. And it's just a few games, sure, but when the whole offseason was a set of talking points about taking better advantage of the tools already in the organization, and we're gonna be leaner and meaner etc, this seems especially hypocritical and dumb of the organization. And worth every ounce of ridicule until/if they start winning again.

I just don't buy that the Cubs window SHOULD be closing. Blzr mentioned the Giants and I don't think that's an apples to apples comparison, but even the Giants had a 7 season run of being pretty good (2010-2016).

Honestly, the offense is fine...and the defense should be fine. It's the pitching that is the issue and I'm surprised that Theo has let it get away from them. in 2015/2016 it was an older staff already; he should have been preparing for that. I hated the Darvish signing at the time (said so on these boards) and always thought they should have signed Arrieta instead.

Maybe Maddon's laid back attitude is the problem...the team is very talented and bringing in a Jack McKeon type of manager may turn things around.

^ I'm not saying it should be closing right now, I'm just saying that it's natural for teams to exhibit cycles of good and bad years. Having a good budget helps maintain regular season success in a capless league versus other teams in your division as well. I think their current team should be thriving for sure.

But partially case-in-point had to do with the Chapman deal. They rented him, gave away a prospect, thankfully won the WS, but now they have neither and the Yankees have both. They paid a price to win that World Series, and that price was Torres. If Torres is on this team right now, perhaps we're saying something slightly different. But that's just one player, and that's no guarantee. Lester is also 35 years old now, blah blah blah... I'm just bringing about the ideas behind what I was saying.

In other news... Wacha walka lotta.

Guess Darvish isn't the only one who can walk the world.

Difference is, Wacha's keeping his team in the game somehow.

Citi Field played like Yankee Stadium late in today's game. The ball really jumps off of Pete Alonso's bat, huh?

Part of the reason I'm not jumping off a cliff yet over the Cubs is that no one save for Milwaukee even looks like they're going to pull away.

Cards are having bullpen and defensive trouble of their own today.

Darvish has too. It was 3-1 when he left the rangers game and 1-0 in the Atlanta game
