How many wins did he win for the Mets? While he did well when he first came over, after that he didnt do anything for the mets.. while i'm not expecting Beltran to be a savior, he's a better defensive outfielder & has driven in 100 RBI the past several seasons.. Hildago only had that one big year where Houston tremendously overpaid him for.
Didn't Hildago go on a tear for us for like two weeks to a month? I thought I remembered some late game tying homers, plus winning homeruns, but I could be wrong.

Don't get me wrong, I can't wait to see what this team can do when healthy. My comments were really over simplifying things, but I am just used to being disappointed with this team.

I still enjoyed the arse whooping we gave the Yankees at Shea. I really thought the team came together after that.

Until the trades I would like to forget. I felt the Wiggington trade was much bigger than people made it out to be. After Ty left, I felt the team lost the fire they had. Benson may turn out to be a very good pitcher, but Ty brought the little things to the team.

And we all remember the OTHER trade...

Re: The Mets: How Good Will This Team Be?

This team lost 91 games last year. Their bullpen is a huge question mark, and outside of Pedro, who's going to step up in that rotation? Glavine? Benson? There's potential there, but even Pedro, has question marks. I can't see them trading those 91 losses for a 91 win season. It's easy to get seduced by an offseason of big spending but right now .500 is a realistic expectation of the 2005 Mets.

Byrnes is a player with some legitimate talent. He's solid in the field with speed on the basepaths. If he hadn't been playing for Oakland he'd probably have a few 20 steal seasons under his belt at this point. The mental aspect of his game is still under some scrutiny. He gets agitated easily, none more evident than his boneheaded play in the 2003 postseason where he didn't have the sense to even tag home and chose to instead give Varitek a big shove. He was probably lucky Varitek was looking to get the baseball and the out because I don't think many people would put money on Byrnes in a head to head bout with Jason Varitek.

Re: The Mets: How Good Will This Team Be?

Honestly, I can see the Mets going either way at this point.

On one hand, their rotation includes two hall of famers (Glavine and Martinez), two young studs who can pan out well under Peterson (Benson and Zambrano), and a starter who is the definition of crafty (Trachsel). On the other hand they have two pitchers who may well be past their best days (Martinez and Glavine), a pitcher who has been OK as of yet in his career (Benson), a pitcher who leads the universe in walks and hit batsmen (Zambrano), and....well....Steve Trachsel.

The same thing goes for their lineup. If healthy (BIG IF), and if their young players continue to develop, they have a solid core of young players with Wright, Reyes, and Beltran, and a decent core of veterans (Piazza, Floyd). But then again, Wright and Reyes are still young, Floyd is injury prone as is Piazza (and he CANNOT throw), Matsui hasent proven himself in the MLB yet, and they have a big ? at first base (pending Delgado). The only real "sure thing" I think will be Beltran.

Lastly, their bullpen is....shaky. Braden Looper is underrated in my opinion, but outside of him theirs really noone of note. When your setup men include Felix Heredia and Mike DeJean....thats not too good. Factor this in with their top two pitchers not known to go 9 (at this point in their careers), and you have a mess waiting to happen.

Honestly, I can't put good faith in the Mets being above an 85-89 win team. They have the potential, but until I see them live up to it, I wouldnt put my money down on them. Even though they brought in big names, they still have holes.
...bad company 'till the day I die.
