The problem is the organization not willing to commit to him after being #2 in attendance (asterisk worthy due to covid, but still) and they traded the few farm assets that they had in order to just hopefully replicate his production.

I wish Freeman all the best.

Most metrics suggest Olson is better than Freddie at this stage in their careers. So if you’re strictly arguing production, Braves and AA did the right thing today.

Moving on from Freddie makes sense and I'm not upset with the front office at all. They've earned our trust.

It seems his asking price was steep and I'm not sure with how the Braves are setup you give him 6+ years at $30+ million per year. The move to bring in Olson and not match Freeman's demands makes perfect sense.

From what I've heard the Braves threw the bank at him, but it wasn't enough, and he wanted years they weren't comfortable giving. It stings to lose what has been the face of the franchise, especially after he has said time after time after time that he wants to be a Brave for life, but he it isn't the end of the world and replacing him with Olson is potentially an upgrade.

We don't know the future and 5 years from now a 39 year old Freeman may be still having MVP caliber seasons and he will be worth the money. He may fall off this year some and then next year significantly. Who knows. Olson is entering into what should be his prime and he's already statistically been as good or better than Freeman, so I don't mind the move and think he Olson does progress even more as a Brave that their team won't miss a beat from a talent perspective.

Sure, as someone who was a Braves fan my entire life I hate to see someone like that go, but the production goes beyond simply Olsen vs Freeman. It's Olsen vs. Freeman and a handful of prospects that this team desperately needs because despite winning the world series there were and are some big holes on the roster. Holes that have to be filled through either more free agency and money or prospects. Despite huge increases in revenues the last few years, Atlanta still can't/won't compete with the big market teams in money, and now their already below average farm system just got worse in an effort to replace one player that they only needed to use money to maintain.

Maybe it will work out for them, but the optics are bad.

Just to update the math for everyone, that's now 4 of the 5 AL East teams that are in the running for Freeman.

That means there's only one team in the division that isn't.

If the Blue Jays miss on Freddie. What about a trade to bring Votto to the homeland? Does anyone else see that as a logical pivot?

Not only does Atlanta have a new 1B in Matt Olson, it’s going to have him for a long, long time. Olson and the Braves have agreed on an eight-year, $168 million contract extension, sources tell ESPN. Atlanta locks up the hometown kid two years before he was due to hit the market.

8 years from now he will be 1 year older than what Freddie will be at the end of this season. It makes more sense to give the 27 year old the long term deal, not the 33 year old.

                            Hopefully it works out.

Edit: Freeman is 32 now, not 33. So change everything by 1 year. The logic still applies.

I hate losing Freddie. But emotion aside, it's pretty hard to argue against the logic of locking up the younger first baseman.

I still hate that Freddie sacrificed during the down years. And now that we should be contenders for awhile, we're like no thanks.
