MLBTR projected Vlads arbitration number would be 7.9m

Jays and Vlad agree on a 7.9m deal to avoid arbitration.

      That was easy.

They also signed Chapman to a 2 year 25m deal. Basically just bought out his arbitration years. Was projected for 9.5m this year.

So the way things worked out here, they basically just felt as if his deal next year would be around 15m anyways so they just settled on it now and dont have to worry about it next year/make a good impression on him and his agent. Also helps that this is almost like front loading the deal slightly since 12.5m is cheaper for 2023 than 15m.

Also, for all the talk over the years about the Braves never spending money, blah, blah, blah, Braves currently have a payroll over $180M with their luxury tax payroll at nearly $210M. So, I think folks need to kill the "Braves are cheap" narrative.
well they did kinda tank like the Astros and Cubs just not quite as bad as losing 100 games. the Phillies are really the only team right now that we can say the tanking hasn't worked yet. but they didn't give it enough years I guess Detroit about to hit that tanking works soon. and Baltimore and Miami are only a couple of years away too.

You're right but I'm confused about what this has to do with the Braves payroll.

I like that move for the Jays.

Straight up would've been fine, but they also got a prospect too.

Tapia is a left handed OF who can steal bases, which will help the Jays lots on a team built for power.

Both. Have a 0.4 war too. The trade helps both teams though grickuk project for a better season, that’s probably before the trade though.

Not exactly a Hot Stove topic, but Andrew Miller announced his retirement.

Interesting that he was so involved in negotiating the new CBA and now won't play under it. Kind of interesting to compare that with Scherzer who said he definitely doesn't want to be involved in negotiations again whether he is playing or not (I certainly don't blame him). I guess props to Miller for trying to work a deal that didn't benefit him much

Well the idea with the tank is to spend money when it matters. Astros, Cubs, Washington, Phillies and now Detroit have spent some serious dough trying to become good when they were trying to pull out of their respective rebuilds.

I'd much rather have done a Jays style retool where they team didn't have to be a bad for as long, but Detroit (and Philly) was so overleveraged with bad contracts and no farm trying to win their first title with that group, that they really had no other option than a total purge. As we've seen with Philly, it's no guarantee of success; they've been stuck now in the doldrums for several years. That said, as long as there are success stories, teams will keep doing it.

An underrated part of the deal, Jays got an IF prospect.

So that's an extra player they have should they want to package some guys for a certain star IF. Or it makes them more willing to part with a better prospect if they really think that new prospect might pan out.
