    Re: 4/7 - 4/17 Game Discussion Thread

Baseball absolutely needs to be shorter.

Opening day yesterday, of course I'm wearing my Jays stuff, and one comment I got from someone who wasn't a baseball fan was basically "I'm not watching a 4 hour game".

Yes, I know the average game doesn't go 4 hours (yet...), but when you have hockey and basketball going about 2.5 hours, and baseball games taking 30 mins longer, those 30 extra mins makes a big difference for people.

Hopefully the pitch clock can help reduce game times, because there's definitely ways to reduce game times without impacting what happens on the scoresheet.

Woodruff was not sharp today, but it appears the Cubs approach at the plate wasn’t all talk. A lot more contact centric ABs to start the season against two aces.

The new rule has accomplished that, and adds a hell of a lot more intrigue.

The average age of a MLB Consumer is 57 which is up from 52 in 2000. The sport understands it needs to adapt.
Not sure why you got so defensive here. Whether or not it adds more intrigue is certainly subjective, but whether or not it shortens the games in any meaningful way is not. If I remember correctly, prior to the ghost runner in being adapted, only about 10% of regular season games went into extra innings, roughly half of those ended in the 10th, and the vast majority were done by the 12th. The new rule almost certainly eliminates marathon games that go longer than that, but those were already the extreme outlier and not worth consideration.

Baseball does need to adapt and figure out a way to shorten the game to attract younger audiences, but the ghost runner isn't even low hanging fruit for that. They have to figure out how to address the 90% of games take over 3 hours to complete despite ending in regulation.

Not defensive at all. There seems to be a true disconnect on why the rule was put into place. With some going as far as claiming it makes the sport illegitimate.

It has had notable results in terms of shortening extra innings. I’m too lazy to look again, but I shared on here the stats. It achieves a result and provides continued/immediate action.

I do agree with your last point. It doesn’t remotely move the needle in terms of bringing young eyes back to the sport, or into the ballpark. However, the amount of blowback it has received from the 50+ year old crowd makes any endorsed meaningful change seem lightyears away.

Weren’t they going to start having advertisements on helmets and jerseys this year or is that something happening in the future? I was surprised that I haven’t seen any yet

Stanton, including the Wild Card game, has homered in 6 straight games against the Red Sox.

Stanton just hammers Red Sox pitching. Dating back to last year. 6th game in a row he's homered against Boston.
