Otherwise, I'm with you on the rest of your list, even though Ortiz is basically a DH
It didn't say anything about hitting..I am talking about overall Defense at 1st...When it says who is the best 1st basemen..I look at best Defensive First basemen which is Darrin Erstad.

Hitting doesn't make you a good 1st basemen all it is eye candy.

      true

lemme get the guy who saves an errandt throw every few games over the other guy who knocks in 100 RBI's and 30 HRs....

So why Ortiz in the AL East then? If you like the defense Ortiz sure wouldn't be your guy

I think you have it mixed up. Hitting makes you a good first basemen, if your a good enough hitter to make it as a first basemen (which is an offensive position, as opposed to shortstop or second) then the good fielding is just a bonus, and well, eye candy.

For what it's worth by the way, by all accounts, Teixeira is actually a good fielding first base man, as he has good range (he came up as a third basemen), and can make the tough picks. Add that to the 38 home runs he hit last year, and well, you have one hell of a good first basemen. Not to mention he's 24.

I've read, and heard some say, that Teixeira will be the next A-Rod type contract Texas will have to shell out for. Any truth to that in folks opinions?

Well, they do have the same agent in Scott Boras I believe. Texas isn't going to make the same mistake twice though. I don't know his contract status though, but I don't think he becomes a free agent for a couple years. A-Rod also played a more valuable position at SS. Teixeira may get a big contract, but it's going to be nowhere near the size of A-Rods. Maybe it will be more in the range of Pujols' deal though.

Yeah thats what I'd think, hes not due for FA for a couple years atleast so if he continues to hit the way he is he'll get a payday similar to Pujols.
