Re: Boston Red Sox - 2006

Soriano, Lee, and Zito can all collect their money as long as we're not paying for them. I think our stance at the deadline was less about our youth being untouchable and more about these types of players not making sense at the cost. So even if we're not giving up Lester and company, they're still going to command inflated dollars this offseason that we can spend elsewhere on multiple areas. I'd rather see them kick the tires on Andruw or see what it would realistically take to get the Marlins talking about Cabrera, because those guys are stars well worth the money. If they're in sell mode on either of those guys, let's move... if not, Wily Mo can add value around our core talent. Perhaps an innings eater like Livan would make sense?...or any pitcher who doesn't resemble Matt Clement and his overpaid...

The Red Sox need a left-handed bat and need some more depth on the bench, the game against Bonderman addressed that when the righties were flailing at his slider all night long (surprisingly though, Pena wasn't one of them). I don't think Carlos Pena provides anything while Hinske might make a small contribution, it's just unfortunate he'd be around next year.

Yeah, I agree. I don't really get the elation for the Hinske move over at SOSH. They're drooling over his + .800 OPS vs righties and think he's going to make an impact. Adding Hinske could help them win an extra game or 2, but scoring runs is just not a major problem with this team. Helping out the bench is fine, but it's obvious to anybody with a brain that this teams major flaw in 2006 is its starting pitching.

Adding Hinske and Pena is just rearranging the deck chairs, although it seems the players wanted the front office to do something. This may be Epstein's way of trying to send the message that they aren't giving up on '06. Unfortunately, I don't think it will have a meaningful impact on the standings.

I doubt the impact will be anything major. But the deal isn't anything to be pissed about either. With the Blue Jays picking up half the tab for next year. Coming out to about 4.2 million for a year and a third of Hinske's services.

He can spell Youk at first, and Lowell at third. We know Lowell has been battling an injury to the foot, and fouling a ball off last night isn't going to help anything.

The Red Sox weren't going to be able to add any quality pitching at or after the trade deadline. So thinking this move canceled out any possible deal to bolster the rotation and bullpen is moot.

It seems like a solid move that adds depth to the bench, and someone who is above league average to step in if someone were to get hurt.

Has anyone been reading Seth Mnookin's blog?

Surprised to see Bill Simmons took a shot at him.

Yankees dropped 2 straight to the O's including an ugly beatdown tonight, so that makes it 1 1/2 games going into the series.

For some reason I see the Sox sweeping tomorrow's doubleheader and losing each of the next three. Hopefully Schilling/Mussina will be a classic.

Too bad our hitters keep letting all these runs score.

Mike Timlin really hit the nail on the head.

3 man offense today... Loretta 3 doubles, Hinske 3 doubles, Manny 1 solo homerun. Bullpen sucks...

I'm going to the game tonight. If we don't beat Ponson, it's gonna feel like I'm leaving a funeral on the way out of there... Lester needs to be efficient tonight and give us a chance or this could be a slow death weekend.

Hinske should have been hitting fifth today. And Crisp 10th.

Apparently its time for Manny's mid afternoon nap. Francona looks thrilled.

I think the Sox are going to take the game tonight just because we have no one to pitch after Ponson. Proctor cant, Villone cant, Dotel might, Myers cant. That leaves Farnsworth for an inning, TJ Beam, Veras, Bruney, and Mo. Yikes.

We can only throw in so many crappy pitchers in one day and Francona is putting in the worst for the day game I guess (hopefully). I mean it can't get worst then this can it?

Well, to at least look at the brightside not many of us can say we thought we had a great chance to win today with Jason Johnson going.

It stings because he pitched great, and we had our chances to knock Wang around. But that seems the case everytime the Sox play him. I don't know how he does it.

I can definitely see the Sox beating Ponson around like a redheaded stepchild tonight though. Hopefully.
