Re: Boston Red Sox - 2006

Here's reason 459 why I am frequently embarrassed to be a Red Sox fan.

Some freak called up Gordon Edes' home to apparently complain about his article re: Manny Ramirez a couple days ago. It's pretty sad that people care so much about Manny Ramirez to display that kind of emotion..

^That sucks. Especially considering Edes is one of the few guys in the Boston media who doesn't deserve to be spat on.

Also, I was a little surprised to see him write that article. I try to defend Manny but he's not making it easy on himself these days. I still don't know if the Red Sox could get equal value for him in a trade and plug that hole in the lineup. Clearly, this offense needs him.

So Ortiz is alright if Manny leaves, he just want some power to replace Manny in the line up. I wonder if a trade to LAA for O-Cab and top prospects for Manny and Theo goes out and signs Carlos Lee would get the team back rolling.

There are a bunch of different options for the Red Sox to deal with this winter. I personally don't see how a team would get better by losing one of the top right handed hitters in the game, but I suppose Soriano, Aramiz Ramirez, or Carlos Lee could make up for some of Manny's bat. And I don't really want O-Cab back, we can get similiar production out of Gonzalez for a fraction of the price and a better glove. But trading Manny for a Santana, Woods and another prospect deal would be hard to pass up if the Angels offered it.

Angels owner already said they are willing to put more money on the payroll but I think the decision of who to bring will be their GM. He doesn't seem to like what the Sox were asking for last winter. Maybe we pursue Andruw Jones again. He will be in the last year in the contract. There were rumblings about if the Yanks don't pickup Sheff we will sign him. There is still Barry Zito on the market and it seems that the Sox will make a push to sign him. I don't think they will get him but they will make a try for it.

The Angels never mind spending some money, they just hate trading prospects which is what makes a deal with them so hard to consumate. I don't think they would even give up Santana for Manny, especially with Colon's career looking like it's over.

With the loss to the Orioles last night, the Red Sox have secured third place in the AL East.

Odd way for the season to end. Not that anyone was watching with the Patriots on.

I was, partly to see Nixon's sendoff.

Sucks that the rain kept alot of people from going, but it was nice to see him tip his cap to the fans in his first AB. Along with when Tito took him out in the 4th or 5th.

I was. I wanted to see Trot Nixon's (likely) last game on the Red Sox. He got a nice ovation before his at bat to lead off the lineup, and an even nicer ovation as Francona removed him from the game in the top of the 5th inning.

Because of how poorly the 2nd half of the season went, this season will be looked upon with disdain. It is important to remember, however, that this was a really fun team to watch in the first half of the season. In fact, this was one of my most enjoyed Red Sox teams to watch because they played great defense, had solid pitching, and hit fairly well. Beckett was actually pretty exciting to watch at the beginning of the season. Papelbon was unbelievable, and Ortiz kept on hitting those walk off homers. It's going to seriously suck that there are no more Red Sox games for months now, but this happens to me every year. And every year I ultimately arrive upon Bart Giamatti's superb quote on the bitterness at the end of the season:

"It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone."

Red Sox GM Theo Epstein confirmed Sunday that Jonathan Papelbon would enter spring training as a starting pitcher.

Epstein said that it's the opinion of the medical staff that the switch would be the best thing for Papelbon's long-term health. A rotation including Curt Schilling, Josh Beckett, Papelbon and Tim Wakefield looks good on paper, but the Red Sox will have to add quality relievers and there are few out there in free agency. The club could look to take a chance on Eric Gagne or Kerry Wood, but it could use a couple of sure things, too. Oct. 1 - 8:36 pm et

I'd prefer him to stay in the closers role.

I don't know the actual mathematical calculations as to what innings are more important etc. But when he stepped on the mound in the ninth inning, I felt like the game was over.

Keith Foulke was great in 04, but I just had a different vibe from Paps.

I think it's good. He'll be able to pitch more innings and hopefully be able to help us out more.

He might help you out more being able to pitch every day or every other day as opposed to once every five days.
