    Re: Boston Red Sox: 2007

I think Johan is a guy they're willing to throw some money at. Just how much is the big question. 6 years at 150 is an awful lot. I'd almost wonder if they'd try to lower the annual salary to something around 19 and 20 but compensate by tacking on a 7th year. Maybe a 7 year 160 millions dollar contract where the salary keepings going up every year, or something to that effect. He has a good track record though as far as health goes, and he doesn't rely on his breaking ball but rather his change and fastball. His mechanics are clean and he appears to be in great shape too. Health is a factor in any contract, but here it would appear to be far less than one with a guy like Pedro who had a tear in his rotator cuff and losing velocity every year. And I do agree that they prefer to give pitchers no more than 4 or 5 years, but one can't ignore how big a risk JD Drew was/is given his health over his career. And even Beckett, though with Beckett they aren't paying him 20-25 million a year.

At any rate, as a team you don't really let this stuff get too far if you're not willing to pay. I would think the Red Sox hate the idea that Lester's name is being tossed around in the papers as part of a trade. If these reports have some truth, we likely won't hear anything from the Red Sox. If they're false we'll probably get a statement from Theo about how important a guy like Jon Lester is to the club.

To me, this is why a team should build up a healthy farm system. To replace departing veterans and also to make big trades like this one.

How does everyone feel about the latest developments with Ellsbury going to Minnesota for Santana? The offer from last week was obviously not going to get it done from the outset, and with the Yankees offerring Hughes the Red Sox needed to trump that and according to several sources, Ellsbury is the guy the Twins really want.

I'm conflicted only because Ellsbury is young and is exactly what the Red Sox need at the top of their order. Granted we don't know how good he will be next year. He likely won't hit .350 for 600 at-bats but I see him as a .280/.360/.480 kind of guy with good defense and base running. If I'm the Red Sox, I'd break out of the usual mold of pitching over position players and try to get the Twins to take Buchholz instead of Ellsbury. Buchholz has great stuff but his command isn't there right now and command is the toughest thing to project. How many guys have come along whom we could say "This guy will be great once he gets better command over his arsenal," and it never happens? I'm not saying that will be the case for Buchholz, but it's a possibility and the Red Sox have more use for Ellsbury in 2008 than they will for Buchholz.

However, if they have to part with Ellsbury for Santana then I suppose so be it. I'd make that trade just because it is Johan Santana and he is the best pitcher in baseball and likely will be for a few more years. Crisp stays on as the starting centerfielder and once again we're left hoping he can find the player he was back in Cleveland. At least we know the defense will be there.

I'd be less bothered if it were Clay to be honest. The centerfielder of our future vs. one less great young arm when you're adding Johan ... I wish it were Coco, Clay and a prospect.

I would much rather trade Ellsbury. Position prospects are a dime a dozen. Buchholz also has a higher ceiling then Jacoby. I see Ellsbury as a pre Boston Coco with more speed and a better OBP, with less power.

The only time Buchholz has had trouble with his command has been in the majors ands its such a SSS that you can't really use that as an indicator. His K/BB has been around 5 through out the minor leagues. I don't see where you got the idea that he has control problems.

IMO pitchers are a lot more valuable then position players.

I think it is a bad idea. I don't think the Red Sox don't need to trade away another future stud like they did with Hanley Ramirez.

The Sox won a championship with Beckett and Lowell. F Hanley Ramirez. Without those two, do we win the championship? No. I'll take Beckett and Lowell every time over H. Ramirez.
