Re: Your 2008 Toronto Blue Jays!

Man I come home to the worst news ever

I hope that this isn't the beginning of many arm problems for Marcum because it was last year that I said he'd be an ace for the Jays or any other club in 3-5 years. At least we'll get Jannsen back next season.

As for Downs, he's not going to be a rotation guy. Cito loves him as the setup man and I love him in that role as well, then again we have Accardo coming back to so there's that flexibility.

I hope AJ stays. I'd like to see if this was just a "contract year" thing or if he's truly turned the corner as a pitcher. I notice that he pitches now more then just throwing heat all the time.

To me the biggest thing with AJ is that *knock on wood* his arm troubles are behind him. Assuming that really is true, this isn't contract year pitching its the way he always will pitch. I think it would be bad news for both parties for anything other than AJ staying, to be honest. We all know our rotation takes a serious hit, and for AJ he now has to go to a new team without his mentor in Doc and with a training staff that has no clue how to handle his arm to keep it healthy like the Jays have. IMO 1 or two more years with a little cherry on top like 1 or 2 million and he stays, and that's a pretty painless deal for the Jays assuming he stays healthy.

This is total throw away info but AJ Burnett was in Harley Davidson of Toronto shopping motorcycles, then a trip next door to the Lamborghini dealership.
Seems strange as you would think he would not be allowed near a motorcycle.
Hopped in his Rolls Royce and split after signing a few autographs. Good to see him out and about taking in this city.

Either he's deciding to get ripped off and buying stuff in Canada when he's going to end up in the U.S. in a few weeks, or he's getting a crapload of money in a couple days.

He's probably hit the markers on his bonus incentives or maybe he's gonna stay next year

Nice to see Cito will be around for a couple years as he was given a contract extension through the 2010 season.

I honestly believe with Cito at the helm that this team will play a lot better then it has shown in the last few years.

Nice to see Roy get win #20. Too bad the sportswriters will give the Cy Young to Cliff Lee because if you dig deeper into the stats Roy has probably been a bit better.

Some other housecleaning info: JP is back for at least another year (damnit) and there's talk the Jays are gonna try and redo Doc's contract so that he stays longer. The thinking is that Doc may actually bite since Cito's here and there's actually a direction the club is going into. Personally i'd love to see Doc spend his whole career in a Jays uniform.

                  He does doesn't he?

Whip, CG, K's K:BB are all in Doc's favor I believe.

Props to Richmond on his first career win and Thigpen on his first career HR. I realize it was a shortened game and that the season is essentially over, but I still think its good to close out with some wins here.

Don't know if anyone here saw it but, but Sportsnet had a one-on-one with AJ and twice in the interview AJ said something along the line of "hopefully my guy and JP can get something worked out here." Also, Cito and JP confirmed negotiations have begun on two-year extensions for all assistant coaches has begun which I think is good news.

                        GODFREY IS GONE YAAAAAY!

He'll be stepping down once his contract expires at the end of '08. I read an article insinuating that Beeston might return to the Jays that would be some interesting stuff.

I don't know about the massive rejoicing you have going there. We already know JP is back after Godfrey got Rogers to guarantee it, so its not like a new President will really change anything. To me Godfrey was just like us, a fan who wanted to win. Just like anyone, he didn't always make great moves. But do you really think Rogers would have boosted the Jays payroll from $50 to $100 million if Godfrey didn't get him to do it? We may not have won anything with it yet, but we are light years closer than we were before it got boosted. I think on the whole Godfrey was a lot better for this team than he was bad, and there are lots of teams (not just in baseball) that wish they had a president who was as much of a mover and shaker as Godfrey was.

As for your Beeston hopes/rumours, Scott Carson at Sportsnet says there is pretty much no chance of him coming back.

                            Bah I know

HOWEVER, I was listening to Prime Time and the Bobcat says according to people who've been talking to Gillick a bit have said that Gillick would think hard about coming to Toronto if offered the job as GM. I think Rogers would be wise to kill two birds with one stone and hire Gillick as President and he eventually deep sixes JP in the middle of the season.

I know far fetched but I can dream.

They also speculated that Rogers may hire someone to run the entire Rogers sports division and Bobcat threw out Sam Kasten's name. He's a good choice too IMO.

Gillick isn't exactly endearing himself to the fans of Philly (although they have made the playoffs a couple straight year). The best hope for the Jays would be getting Gillick and hoping that he brings over Mike Arbuckle, who is without a doubt the best scouting director in baseball.

                                PAUL BEESTON IS BACK!

Well at least as an interim guy. Essentially he'll be looking for the new long term President. I like this a lot as I have no trust in the Rogers braintrust in selecting a president. I kinda hope that Beeston takes this job and then falls in love with running a major league franchise again and sticks longterm.
