Good points, Pared. Choking like that two seasons in a row has to be considered a great success with all the adversity you guys faced throughout the season. Even though you came up incredibly small, at home, for two straight seasons, you really have to be proud of that because you had some injuries. Kudos to the Mets for even getting into the position of being able to stage yet another pathetic choke job. What a great season.

Re: 2008 New York Mets Discussion

        Now the question is.....

        1. Whats the payroll for next year
        2. Do you continue to rely on certain guys
        3. Have to fix that bullpen/2nd base,
        4. Find either a true 2nd or 3rd starter.

The good thing is, there is some really good talent there to build around. Omar is going to have to some work, but with a couple of signings, and maybe a trade or two...........the Mets could be a force next year.

I don't have it in Omar but I also don't think he's done a great job. He's also not the reason we're in the situation we are in (which by the way is being a 2nd place team). You could find plenty of general managers that can receive the 2nd highest payroll in baseball, inherit two franchise players in Reyes and Wright, and win 90 games.

I think Pelfry could be a true #2. If Maine comes back from his injury and they bring Ollie back as a #4 that's a pretty solid rotation. The pen is really where they need to focus pitching wise.

I kinda feel sorry for the Mets this year, in 2007 I thought it was a 1 off but the 'pen has gotten worse.
Why the Mets didnt take a reliever during July is beyond me. But you have got positives in '09, a new ballpark, possibly a new coach and your managment team should bolster the pen.
                      Good Luck, Mets!

Nah, I think Jerry is coming back; Omar admitted as much in an interview with Mike Francesa last week. Casey Stengel and Connie Mack combined would have had trouble with the shaky bullpen. That needs to be the first order of business, addressing the pen. I believe we've got a nice little core in the rotation with Santana, Big Pelf, and Maine, especially if Maine can learn to economize his pitches. I think Ollie is gonna wind up somewhere else.

The organization was on record saying that either the pitchers that they FELT could help had to go through waivers, or the asking price was too steep. And let's be real, there were NO IMPACT relievers moved to other teams by the deadline. Good/great relief is fleeting

it's pretty obvious that Manuel, as he should, will be back. The inadequacies of the bullpen had NOTHING to do with Manuel, but EVERYTHING to do with ownership.

I find it funny that Omar got the extension before our season ended, I think that Wilpons regret doing that. The way they closed out Shea Stadium was beautiful there was not a dry eye at Shea.

Looks like Jerry is coming back and the Wilpons view the season as a success. As I said earlier in the thread, this team really did do good things just to be in the race playing around .600 after Manuel took over.
