I think early on if Dice-K is still getting it together we might see both slide in there. I like Buchholz in that spot because I think regular work will be important for his success. Wakefield is much more adaptable for spot starts and relief work. He's as steady as they come, and doesn't need as much management.

One thing I don't think they'll do is repeat what they did in 06 and trade away their "extra" pitcher (Arroyo for Willy Mo still hurts my feelings), as they've learned their lesson in that regard.

It's definitely a nice problem to have as there are bound to be (through injuries, needed rest, etc) plenty of opportunities for both to contribute quite a bit. Either way, I'll put up our rotation against anyone's and feel pretty darn good about it.

Not trying to hate on anyone or rain on your sawx parade bu John lackey is ranked last in nearly every category when it comes to pitching at fenway with a minimum of 5 starts.

        <table><tbody><tr class="last"><td>W-L</td> <td>2-5</td> <td>Worst</td> </tr> <tr class="last"> <td>ERA</td> <td>5.75</td> <td>2nd-worst</td> </tr> <tr class="last"> <td>Opp. OPS</td> <td>.898</td> <td>Worst</td> </tr> <tr class="last"> <td>WHIP</td> <td>1.66</td> <td>Worst</td></tr></tbody></table>

those are his career numbers at fenway. Just sayin he might not pan out for you guys but you still have a good rotation and the best bullpen in the league.

lets keep in mind that pitching in fenway means facing the red sox EVERY game, annualy one of the top scoring teams in the league, and brutal on righties in general. i think stats like this speak more to to success or faliure versus a particular oppnent than the park they play in. A couple starts against the indians and orioles should help those stats.

I just discovered this thread in the baseball forum finally a place to talk sox, yes!!!
Im excited i think beltre is going to have a good offensive year 30 hr 85 rbi type year, i think hitting in fenway will help him, safeco is a pitchers park. I also think Victor Martinez is going to get 28 hr and 95 rbi... we can only hope though!

Also i think we have the best staff and pen in the MLB and i dont think its close. especially if delcarmen gets his stuff back together

Francona calls him Pedey as well as some of the players too, so you're not off.

I just call him Dustin...or awesome.

                              BULLPEN
                              RHP Jonathan Papelbon
                              RHP Daniel Bard
                              LHP Hideki Okajima
                              RHP Ramon Ramirez
                              RHP Manny Delcarmen
                              RHP Scott Atchison
                              LHP Scott Schoeneweis

                              DISABLED LIST
                              RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka (back)
                              RHP Boof Bonser (groin)
                              INF Jed Lowie (illness)
                              RHP Junichi Tazawa (elbow)

What to like: The Sox have a much better defensive team than last season. ... The bottom third of the order is far more dangerous than what they usually ran out there last season. ... The Pedroia-Martinez-Youkilis combination will do a lot of damage. ... The rotation is strong top to bottom and daunting at the top. Is there a better No. 3 in baseball than Lackey? ... Papelbon's "off year" last season was better than most closers have a right to ever expect and he seems motivated to improve. ... Bard and Okajima should be an effective set-up duo. ... The bench has some good sticks and versatility in Hall. ... The versatility of Youkilis and Martinez and Ellsbury's ability to play center will allow the lineup to shift easily.

Things to wonder: Will Ortiz be Big Papi again or a guy nearing the end? ... Beltre and Cameron could be productive hitters rejuvenated at Fenway Park or .250 hitters who will combine for 250+ strikeouts. ... Delcarmen has pitched all spring training like he is injured. ... Can Matsuzaka return and make the rotation even stronger? Or were his first two seasons a mirage? ... There's not any speed on the bench. ... Can Drew protect Ortiz in the order. ... Can Lowell accept his role and be a force off the bench? ... Bard was hit hard near the end of last season. Can he adjust to hitters seeing him more often?

Bottom line: This is a 94-96 win team because of its pitching and defense. But the three best teams in the American League are the Yankees, Red Sox and Rays and they're all in the same division. The Rays were the best team in the Grapefruit League and that wasn't a fluke. They're stacked with talent.

It's going to be a fun summer.

I personally am not worried about Dice K, since after he got healthy his final 5 starts of the season last year he was untouchable. And if that was any indication to this year as far as health concerns, he should do as good if not better than his first two seasons.

Papi the same as well, he started slow, and lacked protection, but was a beast and nobody hit more HRs or RBIs than him from when he got hot to the end of the season, and still put up great numbers for one who was non-existent the first few months.

People want to blame PEDs, but his highest performing years they were all tested, and clean. He was plagued with knee and wrist injuries which all account for power generation. His numbers were insane because he had either Manny protecting him, or he was protecting Manny. Take that type of protection or protecting out of ANY lineup not in the National League, and the results would be the same for any hitter. His average will decline too, due to a lot of hits being robbed with the "shift" Joe Maddon (TB) has the league employing the last few years on a primary pull hitter.

If he is healthy this year, look out.
