I say trade martinez and a prospect or two and 3 mil to san diego for Gonzalez. Then you have Gonzalez, Youkilis, or Beltre dh, and bench or release Ortiz.

But if Martinez starts throwing people out, then scratch this idea.

Papi's the least of my concerns, though you're right...he's not the same player. I'm not too worried there though, as you can't start much slower than he did last year and he still ended up contributing pretty well down the stretch. Plus, the way Varitek has played when given a chance has been encouraging, and I'm perfectly fine with DHing Martinez and letting Tek back behind the plate until a more suitable long term option presents itself. Our pitching staff might appreciate it too (I'm looking at you, Josh Beckett) though Lester has just looked rough regardless of who's calling the game.

My major concerns are Martinez's bat not being worth his uselessness behind the plate and our pitching and defense (what should be our strength) being so inconsistent. our offense has been the least worrisome aspect, which is scary considering the focus of the off-season.

The good news is Beckett's looked sharp his last couple starts (again, with the Captain behind the plate), Lackey's been a rock, and it's only 12 games into the season...lol.

Very frustrating to watch right now though...that's for sure.

Completely agree with everything you said, though, I'm not worried about Lester at all. He was pretty terrible at the beginning of last season and had one of the best second halves in the majors. He'll be fine.

I'm worried about the defense, mostly. They (I'm looking at you, Scutaro) have not looked good.

And yeah, Martinez is being outplayed by 'Tek on both sides.

            Uggh...we are at home right?

Rough series for sure. The Rays have had our number for a bit but man...the boys could sure use a W about now!

              Re: 2010 Boston Red Sox

I think it's interesting that the Red Sox, who spent the offseason talking about the defensive upgrades they were making, are playing Bill Hall in CF and two guys behind the plate that couldn't throw out my pregnant wife. I know injuries to Cameron and Ellsbury have forced their hand in center, but Catcher is one of, if not the most important defensive position on the field and they have a couple of DH types squatting back there.

They better not get too far back or they will never catch the Rays/Yanks.

With 7 stolen bases already through 4 innings I'm definitely signing on for Martinez at DH and Varitek at catcher. I haven't watched the game but apparently 1 was even on a pitchout.

And yes...Darnell Mcdonald has been like a shot of adrenaline for these guys.

Hopefully they ride these two close wins into some momentum.

We're approaching decision time for Theo here ...

                      Does he ...
                      • Release Ortiz?
                      • Call up Wagner or Brown to catch so Victor can retire as a catcher?
                      • Start looking at big trades ... AGon, Sizemore, etc?
This team just isn't gelling, and I expect 1 or 2 of the following to happen before the break.

Over the last 2 years Varitek has thrown out something like 7/108 runners trying to steal. Hes washed up. Plus Wakefield was pitching.

This team is digging quite the hole. They're playing awful baseball and not showing any signs of gelling as a team.

Consider me worried about our playoff chances in May. I said it ...

I'm somewhat worried too. Not because I don't think they can turn it around, but because the Rays and Yankees are playing great and it may just be too big a hole to dig out of.

The thing is that while hitting hasn't been phenomenal, it's actually near the top in a few categories and very steady in the others.

It's pitching and defense that are hurting us right now. They've allowed the most runs in the AL and are among the worst 3-4 teams in nearly ever category. Defensively, they have the 2nd worst fielding percentage and 2nd most errors. These were supposed to be the backbone of the team, which makes it all the more frustrating.

Then, of course, there is the near record pace of SBs being allowed, though I contend that would be made less of an issue if everything else was as advertised.

Starting pitching isn't something I'm too worried about as the track record and depth is there. The bullpen, on the other hand, can be a crap-shoot from year to year and there's less for me to be confident about there.

Definitely a rough start to the year. If it were the days of just the Yankees to worry about, I'd be less concerned. It is still early, but they need to get it figured out quickly.

Bump for Sox vs Yankees series.

Going into his we've lost 2 games in a row so it would be nice to put a stop to the losing streak and win a few games against the Yanks.

I still think it is to early for Theo to make any moves. This team has plenty of talent, its just a matter of putting it all together at the right time. I won't be worried until after the All-Star break. As most of us know this is baseball and anything can happen over the course of a season so don't give up yet.

Im not too worried about our our playoff chances. The Rays will cool off and so will Toronto. I am not sure about the Yankees though, they are so stacked and they seem to never cool off. The Sox will pick it up eventually though I am sure of that. Not saying they will make the playoffs but Im not saying they wont either.
