    Re: 2010 Boston Red Sox

This thread has been asleep for a month so I thought I'd make a few observations:

-Tampa has cooled off a little, and the Sox have made up ground so they're in much better shape now
-Lackey should be pitching a lot better than he is. He's been battling control issues and I hope he bounces back
-Bucholz looking solid and it's good to see Pedey and Papi get hot

Sucks to have so many injuries. But if you look the Sox are still winning games, and the starting pitching has been key. You can tell this team is built for mental toughness, to still win with bench players and depth.

Tampa seems to be showing their young age, and are imploding in the clubhouse. It could not have come at a better time with injuries to VMart and Pedey.

Should be an interesting series. The team's MVP is Beltre so far.

Starting to have our injured guys filter back in. Hopefully Beckett stays healthy and can be a boost down the line. He should be strong if healthy as he's barely pitched this year. The bullpen has been shaky, so it might be good to make a move there...I hate relief pitchers...lol....so damn unpredictable. Despite the injuries, the offense has been fine, so getting guys like Pedroia and V-Mart back will be a good boost.

Technically, the division is still in reach, but I think the best chance is the WC. They are .500 against the East and Central...gotta get better there if they want to do anything. They need to finish the west coast trip with a gain in ground. Hopefully get at least 1 of the 2 remaining in Seattle and 2 of 3 against LA.

I'm really hoping they are firing on all cylinders when they get to the Rangers series so I can draw some hate when I sport my Jersey at the games in Arlington.

I don't have a problem with it. I know the airheads on the radio are probably ranting and raving over the fact that the Sox pretty much decided to stand pat, but what did people expect? The team's biggest area of concern is the bullpen but how much should a team give up for a fungible reliever in the midst of a good season? I'm in agreement with most who say that Scott Downs would have been a great fit for this ballclub but if the asking price was Casey Kelly then screw that. I'd rather roll the dice on Doubront or Bowden and see if either one of them can come in and get some guys out. It wouldn't have bothered me though to see them get in on Qualls or Wood, who incidentally, ended up on the two teams Boston is chasing. Tampa and NY gave up basically nothing for those guys, I don't see why Boston couldn't have done the same.

If Boston wants to see October it's going to have to get contributions from its players coming off the DL, namely Pedroia and Elsbury. And the pitching needs to show up. The Sox have plenty of head to head games left with the Rays and Yankees, it won't be easy but it's also not impossible to leap at least one of those teams in the standings.

Yup. I'd be shocked if Theo made any kind of waiver moves now (unless it's to sell off an expiring contract).

I think it's time to start thinking about that middle of the order offseason acquisition. Only problem ... I don't think Werth or Pena are worth the inflated investments. Nor am I thrilled at the concept of cleaning out the minor leagues to acquire Adrian or Prince.

Something tells me that on the heels of a frustrating season, Theo will have more pressure to make "the BIG move" this offseason. And for my money, the FA market isn't that good. So do you entertain an Ellsbury, Pap, or VMart trade to get a cornerstone bat? And combine that with position prospects that are probably a year or two away. Makes me worried about our offseason.

Well hey, at least they won tonight.

And I agree - there's going to be a lot of pressure on Theo this offseason to make something big happen. He's proven to be very level-headed, though, and hasn't even really forced anything that I can remember.

I'm not sure a prototypical middle of the order bat will be out there. Werth is tempting as the heir-apparent for Drew, who will be entering the final year of his contract. He fits the profile the Red Sox covet so I expect Theo will explore that option, but depending how expensive it gets, may not deem it worthwhile. Some of it will also depend on what Kalish displays over the final two months. I do expect Boston to kick the tires on Crawford, the problem is, if the Yankees decide that Crawford is their man then he'll be a Yankee (the same can be said of Werth). While not really a middle of the order bat, he'd fit in nicely as Boston's left fielder and would bump Cameron to fourth outfielder status. Good luck getting a fly ball to fall in with Crawford, Elsbury, and Drew out there.

It wouldn't shock me to see Papelbon dangled, but I don't know what he could bring in. With one year of expensive club control left, there isn't a ton of value there for an acquiring team. Given Fielder's defensive limitations, I don't see Boston expressing much interest in him. Gonzalez will be too expensive as a trade acquisition so write him off now, no matter how much the media wants to talk him up as a possibility.

Ideally, Theo lands either Crawford or Werth and brings back Martinez, Beltre and Ortiz. Rip up that option year on Ortiz and give him 2 years at 16, which is very generous considering what Matsui and Guerrero had to settle for, and hope to cut ties with him after the two years. Ideally, Martinez would be brought back for 2 or 3, but I think if the Red Sox are serious about keeping him it will take 4 years. Consider that two years as a catcher/first basemen and 2 years as the DH once Ortiz is done. Varitek should be allowed to walk and replaced with an all glove no hit kind of guy as the backup (though let's aim higher than Kevin Cash who takes the no hit part a little too seriously). Beltre may be the toughest sign as he's going to be coming off an MVP type year and a showdown with Boras looms. And with Arod's hip situation you can't rule out the Yankees who could move Arod to DH. At any rate, they'll be involved if for no other reason than to drive up the price for Boston. I think there will be a mutual desire by player and team to bring him back, but it will all depend on how Beltre instructs his agent to handle negotiations. Presumably, 4 years will be the starting point with Boras aiming higher. Lowell obviously has no place on the team as well but it sounds like he might retire anyways. Assuming Papelbon is retained for one more year, then I don't see the bullpen as a major issue. Boston just needs to find a reliable lefty because even when Okajima was going good he wasn't particularly dominating against lefties because of a lack of an effective breaking pitch. Maybe Doubront is the guy, but regardless, middle relief is a total crap shoot. Just stockpile arms and hope a few guys emerge behind Bard and Papelbon. Wakefield will be the toughest call of all. Is he worth the roster spot as a long relief/swing man? Do you try and trade Matsuzaka to open up a rotation spot for him or do you release him at the end of the season? I'd lean towards the first option and let him know his role before spring training (heck, if the Sox are out of it then let him know before October he won't be a part of the 2011 rotation giving him a chance to say farewell and retire at the end of the season) to avoid any controversey.

So Predroia returns, but now it looks as if Ellsbury and Cameron are both done for the rest of the season.

Looks like Kalish will be getting quite a bit of, important, playing time for the rest of the year.

Yeah its to bad this team couldn't stay healthy, I feel like they had a lot of potential. We just have to think of the bright spots on the team like Bard and Buchholz turning into complete studs.

And it seems like the Red Sox made out pretty well in the draft signing key guys like Ranaudo, Coyle, and Gecchini who were all supposed to be tough signs. The future is bright in Red Sox nation. We have decent amount of money coming off the payroll and the starting rotation looks really good and is locked up for a while.

Pedroia could be gone for the year and if the Sox can't get anything out of Beckett then there likely won't be a post season in Boston. With the way the top of AL East is all collectively limping towards the finish line, it's looking more and more like this thing is going to be settled in the head-to-head match-ups.

At least the Sox are getting an extended look at Kalish. Westmoreland was probably considered the heir apparent for JD Drew but with his future as a ballplayer in question that title falls onto Kalish by default. He certainly looks like he has the skill-set to be a capable right fielder, it will al depend on his bat. He's always had a strong walk rate down on the farm, while his power is just developing.

Speaking of the farm system, Ryan Westmoreland is slowly on his way back, and embarking on one of the most magnificent comeback attempts in sports today. This kid couldn't even write his name a few months ago, and now he's resuming baseball activities.

Red Sox outfielder Ryan Westmoreland, who underwent brain surgery in March, is set to continue his rehab with the Lowell Spinners and Greenville Drive in the coming weeks, Sox farm director Mike Hazen told WEEI.
